the cons for me during my vista trial:

> multiple files selected disables the security tab (which you can view in file properties via alt+enter)

> UAC was probably slowly driving me insane - so I disabled it. No UAC, not much of a problem for me.

> super annoying problems with vista's explorer.exe not remembering individual folder view settings (eg: if you need to have one dir sorted by name and another by 'date modified')
- man i hate this big time, but perhaps i can deal with an alternative filesystem browser like xplorer2 or something

> cant rely completely on the folder popup size variable
even when it says 0 bytes.
if you need to be sure of the dir size then alt+enter it.

and the pros
> various security improvements, some large, some small (see wikipedia for more info)

> my upgrade process from an old winxp install to vista seemed to be a complete success after removal of IIS.
this impressed me, and is nice indeed.

> you can create symbolic links to files/dirs and explorer recognizes them too

> "I'm impressed with Vista's dual monitor support. So far, leaps and bounds better than XP. "

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
> "completely revamped event logging system"

native ability to forward
events, and the systems use of XML technology. An open technology and the
ability to monitor your logs from a central location is something that the
previous system lacked.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

> "much improved Offline Files feature"

> i like what they've done to the GUI in various ways
and most of the annoying stuff i was able to disable

> alt+up hotkey (goes up one dir level)

> can easily search the start menu; add/remove programs; control panel;

> "There are semaphores available in Vista that allow two (or more) sections of code to access the same critical section without threads going into a wait state. Applications written for XP were written before this was available so they won't know such a feature is available."

> creative labs: "The Windows Vista audio engine runs faster than the Windows XP audio engine did, and Vista has tighter requirements on audio buffer position accuracy than XP did. This exposed low level driver bugs that we had not been seen before. "

> i've read that vista disables Aero when you're playing 3d games
need to personally confirm this.

> Clean service shutdown: Services in Windows Vista have the capability of delaying the system shutdown in order to properly flush data and finish current operations. If the service stops responding, the system terminates it after 3 minutes. Crashes and restart problems are drastically reduced since the Service Control Manager is not terminated by a forced shutdown anymore.

I hate the fact that Vista brings nothing practical for me to the table yet brings bunch of big brother crap like UAC, DRM as well as build in bloatwares that I can get else where that runs faster and works better.

DRM? What's that?

Not using Vista because of DRM is silly. Especially if you own an ipod. Vista does not prevent you from playing back any media nor does it "scan" media looking for piracy. Only google does that. hehe.

While I used vista ultimate, the system used around 500mb of ram idle. XP is the way to go for another year or two.

For those of you complaining about having to click too often to grant permission for certain tasks (taken from a post I made in another thread):

It is not hard to disable UAC (the "confirm" / "permit" button that pops up when you try to perform certain tasks), go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Access Control On / Off > uncheck "Use User Access Control" and then hit ok. You will never have a "Confirmation" or "Permit" button step for your admin tasks again while logged into your administrative account.

If you wish to use a limited account (which is suggested), you can then just create a standard (limited) account and use it for most tasks (have the admin account passworded and login to it as needed or just do the old fashioned right click > run as *admin account* > *type password*).

If you leave UAC enabled (and use a limited + passworded admin account), the standard account will behave similar to linux, in that when you are not logged in as root (admin account), a popup will appear when you try to perform administrative tasks and then you enter your admin password, it then completes the administrative task (you remain in the limited account).

*bangs head on desk*

That reminds me.

My complaint: Vista gives me a sore head...at least when I read the forums.

This disables a lot more than the dialog box. It will also disabled IE protected mode and file and registry virtualization.

If you really can't stand the prompt (which you should rarely see anyway), configure the UAC policies in gpedit to disable it, rather than using the big hammer.

Can this be used to give certain apps free access while others locked down by UAC?

Okay, so what do I hate about Vista the most?

1) Refresh rates. Vista doesn't recognize my monitor (Sony SDM-HS93) and installs the generic driver, a product specific driver is nowhere to be found and every so often a program switches it to unsupported refresh rates (and it always does that waking up from sleep mode, rendering it unusable). The only solution I have found so far is the power button to shut the system down. This seems to be the same issue gamers with a CRT have, only inverted (they can't set the refresh rate high enough, and I can't keep it at 60 Hz at all times). Oh, and Sony Customer Support's response: Please wait while we're working on Vista support. Yeah guys, take your time. It's only been out for a year or so.

2) USB drive installation. Is it really that hard for Vista to remember that the drivers are located at Windows\System32?! Took me hours find a solution, and I have to install every USB key by hand, pointing Vista 3 times to the location of the drivers that came shipped with it. Seriously, that needs to be fixed, Microsoft guys. (I dual-boot XP and it goes without saying that Win XP recognizes all these USB keys and has a drive letter ready automatically in no time)

3) Other than that Vista x64 works great so far. I'm pretty excited about the speech recognition thing. I need to play around with it more, but it shows great promise.

No, the policies are used to control the behavior of UAC. The one I was referring to changes how elevation works for users in the administrators group. By default, you get a UAC prompt when you do something that requires elevation. You can change the setting to make it auto-elevate. So you still have a split token, but since it auto-elevates, having a standard user token most of the time doesn't really matter.

You can still require the normal UAC prompts for standard users, since that is controlled by a separate policy.

Other than not being too fond of explorer, I have no complaints. Drivers arent great but that isnt Vistas fault. Game performance has been absolutely excellent

The thing I hate the most about Vista is the endless onslaught of threads about people who hate Vista.

A part of me also hates that is allows ignorant users to disable UAC, but then a part of me also thinks choice is good, which is something MS lacks in a lot of other areas.

the only thing i could say i "hate" about vista is that i cant customize the file explorer tool bar. in XP i had copy, cut, paste and delete icons up there for those lazy days when i didnt feel like hitting a key.

besides that the only other thing i wish i could do that i cant is remove the wallpaper from the alt-tab. if i wanted to minimize everything id use winkey-m.

other than that iv been loving vista since i installed it on my 4 year old box.

not a single other problem.
