Thread Title: what you hate about vista the most

perhaps if you do not have anything to say that has anything to do with this thread topic you could just stay out of this thread.....

not everyone is in love with Vista, for whatever reason. so let them voice their opinions.

Do we need another 6000000000 Vista troll thread,if somebody is going to do so then expect Vista users and Anandtech members to post their opinions, last time I checked ALL Anandtech members are entitled to post their opinions as long as they keep it civilized.

I hate that windows lacks a "uberkewl" community that can feel better about itself by hanging out on the internet together and making fun of other people.

I'd personally really like to be able to pull the quick launch bar off the taskbar and dock it to the side of the screen like I could in XP.

My problems with Vista are pretty much limited to my issues with Vista Media Center, and the way it handles media.

But really though, theres more than enough of us that have no problems at all with it, so shouldnt that tell those of you that hate it that the problem is either your system or your understanding, and not vista itself?

Its called a learning curve. If you dont like progress, maybe you should go back to DOS.

The only thing I hate about Vista is the fact that it runs every application significantly slower then XP ... if it wasn't for the fact that being a PC/network tech I need to be very familar with it, I wouldn't have bothered with the "upgrade".

Install the 2 packages that were released about a month ago. That's one of the problems they fix.

It still takes damn near forever to copy a bunch of files at once.

I've tried it twice and both times were horrible. Fortunately some patches seem to have came out, SP1 is soon to come out and Creative released the ALchemy EAX wrapper for the Audigy2 series. I might give it another try. 3 strikes and you're out though. Better not fail me again.

I hate it that my 2 GB RAM, 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo Laptop takes about thrice the time to resume from hibernation than my 1 GB RAM, !.6 Ghz Core Duo Laptop does.

Other than that I'm pretty satisfied with it.

SP1 won't make a lot of difference to be honest, since Windows Updates has a few fixes etc... sure SP1 will have some new ones, however drivers won't be included in SP1 and we all know they do make a difference, lucky manufacturers are updating them quite often.

As to Alchemy you do know there is a free universal version out,I have actually got it installed (Audigy 4 btw ) for my old direct sound games so I can have surround sound in games like Icewind Dale etc and yes EAX does work fine in those games with the Alchemy wrapper.

Download link and info for free version note its posted in Creative forums so legal to install.

Btw SP1 is not out until next year for official version.

It has twice as much RAM, so that's pretty much a given. The bottleneck is the the drive as the data is read out of the hiberfile.

Charming! So since you're selling your tablet you won't have to dirty yourself by using it anymore, right? You and XP again.

Network copy is crazy slow for me compared to XP, Ubuntu and OS X.

I do small business consulting and I take my notebook with me all of the time and many times I copy files to and from my notebook to a clients network/server.

Example the other day I was at a clients office. They have a server on the floor below me that will be a new Exchange server. I have the Exchange CD with me....so instead of going to the server and putting in the CD I just mounted the C$ created a folder and thought I would copy the CD contents to this folder and run the install from it while I was RDP'ed into the server. So we are talking 580megs or so, around 6000 files. Simple task that I have done many times under XP and that would take about 10min over a 100meg network....or less.

With Vist it crawled and it was going to take well over an hour! I like how Vista has that more info button on the copy dialog box so you can see the transfer rate.....but to bad for MS I can see that my copy was moving at some crazy slow rate like 200kb a min.....instead of 40mb a min with XP.

Anyhow I have all of the patches and for the most part Vista works fine. I do think over all on my Core Duo 2.0ghz, with a 250gig Scorpion HD and 4gigs of RAM that it is overall just a tad slower to do pretty much anything. Office apps like Outlook 2007 and Word 2007 open slower under Vista than they do in XP...we are talking a few seconds but after using Vista for 6 months that slowness adds up to give you a fell of over all slowness compared to XP and Ubuntu.

Until they fix that network copy problem I am not recomending Vista to any client of mine. I imagine they will fix it, but XP works great right now and I see no reason, especially for a small business customer that holds onto their PC's for 4-5 years will need Vista anytime soon.

I phrased it wrong, when I log into my session after resuming from hibernation, the system is really sluggish for a minute or so in Vista with the über laptop, whereas it's inmediatly responsive under XP and the lesser laptop.

Your uber laptop probably has a 5400 RPM drive just like your "lessor" laptop. If this is true the HD is the bottleneck for you.

Both HD's are basically the same speed. One has undo a 2gig hibernation file the other a smaller one? Hibernation writes your memory contentst to a file....coming out reads it back into memory. So the less memory you have the less time it will take.

You'd hate every operating system. I think at this point, just leave it at "pretty satisfied."

There are two things that truly piss me off.

1: Vista ultimate 64bit will crash with more than 3gb of ram installed, out of the box (it wont boot, it will just BSOD before getting into windows). You have to disable memory hole mapping (or take out a stick), install the fix from microsoft, and then re-enable or install the ram.

2: Performance for games is unacceptable. They'd better fix it with sp1 or sooner, otherwise DX10 is not worth the huge frame drop with Vista as apposed to XP.

There are other small things that are annoying but passable. One thing being that unsigned drivers aren't accepted by 64bit Vista by default, or that hardware accelerated sound is damaged ATM. The whole DMCA and DRM BS can blow me, for all I care.

It's quite stable, however. You don't really get owned by system crashes now, only programs crash.

I really can't agree with that. All the games I played in XP are playing just as great if not better in Vista. I was up until 5 a.m. playing Team Fortress 2 on Saturday night. My girlfriend woke up when I crept into bed and she was like "what the heck have you been doing?" I wouldn't have ended up with an all-night gaming binge like I used to back in the day with crappy framerates.
