The entire debate on this is a totally pointless endeavor because success will change absolutely nothing.
Let's say global warming is real and man made and most people are convinced: Nothing will be done, China will burn more coal and Texas will still have lots of dually trucks.
Let's say global warming isn't real or isn't man made and most people are convinced that it is: Nothing will change, China will burn more oil and the US will still not have any kind of public transportation system.
Let's say global warming is real and man made and most people are convinced that it isn't: Again, nothing will change...we'll just keep on keeping on.
And of course if it is not real/man made and most people believe that nothing will be done.
Those who believe that stopping it or...whatever we were going to do, was ever an actual possibility are deluding themselves! Consider the US deficit problem: We KNOW what caused that, EVERYONE agrees its a huge problem that needs to be solved and it is within our power to solve it. And still, nothing is done. And that is just one country, this would be a problem for the entire planet. Each country would have an economic incentive to cheat should the unlikely event of a worldwide agreement some how even happen. A tragedy of the commons scenario would occur undermining the whole thing.
We absolutely will NOT do anything to solve the much more complicated, difficult to define and harder and more expensive to solve problem of climate change. The fight was over before it began.
