It's extremely bad for the health. The liver is the organ that filters all the bad stuff, so it makes sense. Restaurants here serve it though, but never seen it in a supermarket.

WTF is this bullshit.

The only danger from eating liver is overdosing on vitamin A.

When I was a just a tyke we visited my great grand pa (81 at the time) in southern Ohio, and he was eating calf brain for lunch. I still remember seeing it. Ewww!

Then there are calve's brain sandwiches. I had plenty of liverwurst & braunshweiger growing up. Chicken liver, gizzards, + heart is something we fought over. Mmmmm, giblet gravy. FWIW my parents are well into their 90s & just passed their driver's license tests.

I'm just going by what my dad's doctor told him...my dad loves to eat liver but had to stop because it's really bad for you especially the heart. Of course most atoters know more than doctors, so you must be right.

You need to find a different doctor.

The liver is not a "filter" (in the sense that a real filter works). i.e. it doesn't trap bad stuff and keep it there until you die (bioaccumulation) or until the liver is changed.

I love liver, myself.

The problem Red Squirrel has is he got a twice filtered comment, which originated from his father's MD, made by his father about why he had to quit eating so much liver.

What the MD most likely was concerned about was the high fat and cholesterol content in liver, not that it filters the blood......but RS didn't get that info after the MD's statement was half-listened to by his dad and then half of that was told to RS.

So, RS made the illogical leap that the lack of intellect gives.....liver bad because I heard it filters crap out of the blood.

The major disadvantage of eating beef liver is the amount of cholesterol it contains. A slice of beef liver has 90 percent of the DV of cholesterol. Cholesterol is vital to the creation of cells and certain hormones, but your body naturally produces all it needs. Excessive dietary cholesterol can increase your risks for heart disease and stroke.

Risk of heart disease and stroke. In other words, not something you'd want to eat every day.

The KFC double down is good for you too, if you don't consider all the sodium it has.

I remember being in the hospital about 30 years ago for two weeks and they had liver like 4 times because it was supposed to be so good for you. Now they never serve it.

I eat it all the time... I'm super pissed foie gras is now illegal in the USA. BUt liver is what makes the Vietnamese Sandwiches super good!

Uh, foie gras is not illegal in the US. I believe it is illegal in California, however.

EDIT: Just saw this:

Correction... Illegal in California!

Foie gras is DELICIOUS too!

Offal is nasty, liver particularly so.

I just will never understand how a filter organ full of bile salts is appetizing to people.

I think people who eat that kind of stuff are hard to be around when they sweat as well. Nasty nasty nasty.

Probably because of endless rounds of austerity policies to hospitals' budgets

..or maybe hospital food has a bad enough reputation without involving organs that few want to eat.

Liver isn't exactly expensive last I checked, I bet kitchens pay more for basic sirloins and pork.

Two large (~50g) eggs contain 130% ~ 140% RDV cholesterol, and have hardly any of the other good stuff in liver (vitamins and such).
