HIMYM ended happy in a way.
Yeah it was sad that we find out the mother passed, but he got with Robin in the end, which he had been trying to do forever.

I think its hard to end on a happy note when something is ending. People want closure, happiness isn't required.

The last 10 or so episodes have been heavy on tightening loose ends for various characters but very light on actual laughter for me. It used to be hilarious but the last few weeks have felt like they lost/forgot the comedy part of it being a situational comedy (sitcom). Maybe it's because I just started watching the previous seasons in a marathon over the holidays so the change was more noticeable (since less gradual) for me. Still felt like a death of a thousand cuts.

And I wanted Robin with Barney, dammit!!!

just got around to watching it. pretty decent finale. thought the daughter looked familiar when she started talking. interesting to find out they only recorded the kids over the first two seasons and saved it to play in the later years.

This just in. Apparently the kids on How I Met Your Mother are saying
they knew nine years ago the ending of the show. In order to film them before they aged the producers told them they were going to kill off the mother and ok Ted to ask out Robin.

HIMYM ended happy in a way.

They were sent to Australia to live out their horribly unfunny, annoying lives in a prison colony, where they were all raped repeatedly, contracted AIDS, and died extremely painfully?

Only possibly happy ending for that show.

Also, Breaking Bad was 'open-ended'? What the shit were you smoking, whoever-said-that?

I don't like the whole 'dead protagonist' thing that people think needs to accompany a critically-acclaimed film or TV series, but in the case of that show (and no, I'm not putting spoiler tags on that. If you were gonna watch BB, then you've already watched it, and they openly stated that he was gonna die well before the series was over), it was...well, what had to happen.

I thought they filmed a couple of different endings and would pick based on the direction of the show although there was a general goal at first

I actually really enjoyed the ending of HIMYM and thought it was almost too perfect of an ending despite the almost rioting on reddit.

I think basically the fans got too wrapped up in the mom so when they essentially killed her just after he met her, it pissed them off because it seemed to make her irrelevant to the story. I thought the show made it obvious that the mom was Ted's soulmate and their time together is a whole different story. The show was about how Ted met Robin and was in love with her until the very day he met his soulmate. Robin was not a runner-up in Ted's love life but someone he was truly in love with but could not love him back until she was ready in life. Robin's life was her career and that's what hurt her relationship with Ted and her marriage with Barney. Assuming Robin's at a stable point in her career, she can now be with Ted who already has two kids. The show made clear Barney wanted kids so he would have given that up if he stayed with Robin. Getting a nameless girl knocked up wasn't the best situation, but he got his child. I thought the show had a very happy outcome as everyone got what they really wanted out of life/relationships.

The last episode of HIMYM was a piece of shit. Pacing was terrible as it skipped through years at a time.

idk, I felt like the past few seasons were really devoted to Barney maturing (a little) and showing some character development, as well as Ted finally getting over Robin and the two of them accepting that they only work well as friends.

and then the final episode just undid 3+ seasons of character development in the last 10 minutes.

they obviously scripted the ending years ago, and refused to deviate from the plan even as the show moved away from that original vision... if Ted/Robin were endgame, they shouldn't have devoted literally the entire final season to nothing but the Barney/Robin wedding.

This. I completely agree with you. That is the absolute perfect ending for that story.
I read that some people mention about true love vs. soul mate, and I can see that in this one as well. Dawson's Creek's ending is somewhat similar. Not sure why I put this in a spoiler tag

The only thing they may have messed up with is insisting on the gimmick that is one wedding weekend stretched out to one season, where they knew that the finale episode itself would be a 15(?) years or so compressed to one hour. This is in my opinion a blunder, as they didn't account (or don't care) for the fact that a lot of the fans do not have the capability to adjust these events for their actual timeline in their minds so that 20-30 minutes at the end seems like a completely rushed and (as a lot of people said) negates a few years of characters development.

Well, the reality is in actuality it's another 15 years of characters development (almost twice as long as the show has been running), and that wedding weekend is a turning point where everybody goes their separate ways, and every single one of them keep growing as characters, storyline that we didn't have the privilege to watch on the screen except a few moments where they showed us, mostly skipping a few years in between.

The ending of HIMYM makes perfect sense to me. I don't think it's particularly happy or particularly sad, but it does successfully make me feel that these characters are really just human beings living their lives. And life just goes on...

I did like how Barney matured enough to be with Robin but at that point, Robin really was more career focused and traveled a lot. That's going to be hard on any marriage so I understand it not working out between them. It's not like Barney cheated on another woman. At first, I was disappointed by his complete backslide after the divorce, but that's probably how someone would react in real life.

I thought the season makes sense in the view that Ted was absolutely ready to met Tracy and not be hung up with Robin like in his past relationships. It also shows a bit more respect to the mom because she wasn't just a second choice that a depressed Ted settled with because he was vulnerable at Robin's wedding. I'd rather him be over Robin completely during his relationship with Tracy and basically until the kids encourage him to go after her again.

It also helps that I basically binged watched this season in a slightly longer time than the time elapsed on the show.
