The top list are good movies with horror themes. Nothing is actually "scary". The only scary films I have seen are documentaries.

The bottom list is films SUGGESTED here (I assume as good films), that have horror themes, but which are so bad no one should sit through them. As it turns out I had to include a couple of suggestions that don't even fit the category, despite the fact they are good films.

I should probably remove Saw though as it is not truly a horror flick.

My favorite obscure horror movie is Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight.

Sunshine is kind of like Event Horizion but not as gory maybe.

Dawn of the Dead remake is my top favorite zombie movie.

28 Days and Weeks later are a good watch.

Hostel is f'ed up, more gross out horror then scare you horror.

The original Hell Raiser was one messed up movie though the ones after that were pretty laughable IMO.

The Thing (Kurt Russel) is good.

[Rec] (I think it was called Quarantine in the US) was decent for a low budget zombie movie.

Disturbia was entertaining, though not really a horror movie.

I guess it depends on what type of horror movie you're looking for.

As I see it there are the real deal horror movies that are engrossing and actually scary (very rare, think Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw, etc..) then there's the horror genre but not really scary or gory movies like Constantine, Disturbia, etc. There's the "it's so beyond belief it makes a better comedy than horror movie" movies also like "demon child 666", which is just so bad it's funny.

I've seen a lot of horror movies over the years, just tell us more specifically what you're looking for and I can give some more tailored suggestions.

Salem's Lot is more nostalgia getting in the way of critical thinking. Rent it and watch how bad it is yourself.

Intriguing, but having to read subtitles will kill any horror/thriller for me.

My suggestions, which mirror many in this thread:

1408 - suspenseful but not outright scary. Terrific atmosphere. Whatever you do, DO NOT WATCH THE DIRECTOR'S CUT! ... unless you want an ending that completely ruins the greatness of everything watched up to that point.

28 Days Later - terrific zombie atmospheric thriller
Dawn of the Dead (remake) - great in your face zombie movie. Not exactly horror or even a thriller in my book, but a great watch and does have its moments where I jumped
28 Days Later isn't as in your face. It's a much more subdued, bleak movie.
28 Weeks Later was enjoyable as well, but 'Days was the better of the two by far.

Descent - holy shit that movie had be on edge on many moments. Atmosphere is amazing, it literally gave me that claustrophobic, oh shit what do we do now, on edge of my seat feeling. I cannot remember which ending was the better of the two, need to watch it again. One of the endings was definitely brilliant though.

Just watched 1408, Last 1/4 wasn't quite as good as the rest, but a good movie overall

I always thought that Prince of Darkness was a creepy movie to watch alone. Kinda corny in alot of places but creepy nonetheless.

Not really a "horror movie" in my opinion, but The Machinist is a very good movie. More of a psychological thriller.
