What're the most resource hungry games these days, just to PLAY AT ALL?

Even people with integrated graphics can kindof play QIII, but what are the most greedy games?
I hear Flight Simulator 2000 and Fly! are infamous. Like a 1.6Gb installation, and will access the HD every 10 secs!
The background to this is I want to see what my RAM heavy system will do if pushed. Even QIII will play at dozens of FPS nowadays with all the options turned on.
It's time to see the next hardware-crippling level!

Maybe Vampire Masquerade and Falcon 4? I've never played them, but I think they were mentioned as system boggers. Maybe it was a while ago though.

ULTIMA IX ALL TIME RESOURCE GRABBER! You need atleast a V5 6k and a P4 1.5 to get 35fps...

Diablo2 is heavy on memory usage, though it's pretty light in other areas.
I get worse disk thrashing in diablo2 than I do in quake3 or UT

Diablo2 takes 100MB+ ram by itself when you are 'in game'

vi_edit's got it right. trespasser runs like crap on anything. nocturne did take resources, but it wasn't too bad on my cel550 w/tnt2. hmm, the only game that seems slow as hell for me is deus ex, and no one lives forever. but i'd have to tip the most resource hungry to no one lives forever.

LOL Gouki so true. With 192MB it doesnt touch my HD much. But with my old K6-2 it blew. Its D3D support is horrid. Now with my T-bird I get about 50FPS in that game.... thats horrid for so low detail and 800x600 on a GeForce DDR. I have no idea why Blizard Glide optimized that game, at the LEAST they should have done a kick ass job in D3D. At this time NVidia is so much bigger, it doesnt make sense to do good glide support and bad D3D support.

erikisaz.... For Dues Ex did you try the new beta D3D patch? Before only 800x600 was playable on my GeForce DDR T-bird 1Ghz.... now 1024x768 runs fine.

The Tresspasser demo isn't a resource hog at all. My system handled it like candy. And my system pales in comparison to all the macho guys with gigahertz Durons around here...

UT is pretty heavy on resources. It's very texture hungry and heavy on CPU usage. Even a 1.2 GHz CPU struggles to get more than 100 fps.

Baldur's Gate II is quite big on the HD installation. The full install is massive.

I have to agree with fkloster about Ultima IX pushing systems to the limits. I haven't tried it lately, but when I was using my P3 700@933, 128mb ram, and a 32mb Geforce 2 GTS card, I could barely play the game, because it was, so sluggish. Even in lower resolutions.

I am waiting for the new generation of processors to try and play it. It runs like crap on everything known to man.

I've read that Ultima IX is 3Dfx(Glide) optimized, so with a voodoo 5 or a voodoo 3, it wouldn't be a problem.

UT is Glide optimized, and it runs like crap unless you have a good computer, regardless of having a Voodoo-based card. I have a Banshee/K6-x upstairs which plays *ok* by my standards in 640x480 low detail, but it's like 5x slower than anything you guys get.

"Glide Optimized" is starting to mean less and less... It's more like "2GHz-CPU optimized".

including system using the NV15 chip

my GTS 32mb NEVER reach 30fps in that demo

I dont have a problem running Ultima 9 or UT on my PII 300 with a V3 3000 and 128 megs of ram. Nothin overclocked either. U9 could be a bit smoother, but overall its definitely playable and not what i could consider sluggish.

I have a Tbird 800 and a voodoo5 5500, and I can barely play Ultima9! With all the options on, its nearly impossible to make a smooth turn! There is just so much pausing in the game it completly ruins the experience
