What's a cheap and QUIET heatsink for my AMD64 3000 chip?

I don't want anything as huge as the Scythe Ninja, and I'm feeling a bit lazy so I really would prefer not to have to remove the motherboard from the case to attach the heatsink. Also, I'd like value for money. It has to be quiet, tho.

Zalman 7000/7700-AlCu will be pretty damn quiet, fairly cheap, and good at cooling to boot. Only problem is that you'll have to remove the motherboard's back socket bracket.

The amd stock opteron copper heatpipe heatsink. $15. Works great and cheap, quiet. You dont get much more value than that.

I have one sitting unused in my cupboard. Don't really want to have to pull the motherboard out of the case. Also, frankly, the fan on that product isn't exactly whisper quiet.

I can hear it whirring up a storm in the case sitting at my feet. not my idea of quiet.

I have an Opteron 148 and I use an Alpha HS. With the fan off, it idles at 43C.
A 4700 RPM fan knocks off about 12 to 14C. Very high quality and inexpensive
but it is on the large side. Beats the stock hands down. I run this 11X262
at 1.38 to 1.425V most of the time...

Really? Strange. I guess my video card fan and northbridge are way louder than it. I hear nothing from mine...

my video card and northbridge are fanless, so I've just got the cpu fan and a 120mm fan at the back of the case.

I suppose ambient noise levels make a difference too. I notice the fans more late at night or early in the mornings, whereas during the day or evening when I can hear cars, machinery, etc. from outside which drown out any fan noise.

That would explain it. My 7800gt fan is friggin noisy so... Also my northbridge fan rattles. I also just changed to this heatsink from my xp-90 with a 3500rpm PANAFLO, which needless to say, sounded like a jet engine. So what I hear from my stock 165 cooler, is pretty silent to me.

If you wanted an xp-90, guy in the fs/t forum has one for sale you might consider. $30 shipped with a panaflo fan. You wont beat that price.

That heatpipe cooler is probably the cheapest "decent" one available and definately can easily install into the stock mounting bracket.

Noise? Just set your BIOS to lower it automatically.

Actually, I didn't realise this is different than the stock cooler that comes with the desktop amd chips. Can I buy one on it's own without the opteron chip?

Of course. Theres a guy on ebay who sells them. --> HEATSINK_OUTLET

$15 shipped. Trust me its a great budget cooler. It had identical temps to my xp-90. Thats why I switched.

The AMD heatpipe cooler is pretty loud, though. I think he's looking for a quiet heatsink. I'll vote for the Arctic Cooler Freezer 64 (Pro or not) too. It's not really that heavy and it's whisper-quiet. I'd go for the pro if possible since it seems to be better oriented than the regular one (My regular one can only point up or down, not to the back).

I ended up getting my zalman 7000 alcu out of the cupboard. Took ages to remove the motherboard, clean chip, attach the new cooler, then get the thing back in the case all hooked up. But the machine is making less noise, and the cpu is even a bit cooler

You're like me then, I've hated every computer I've had since my last P3 because I can't get the damn things to be quiet. I've gone and bought the quietest hsf I can find, new PSUs, installed multiple quiet fans @7V to take the load of the PSU fans, ripped the fans off northbridges and videocards, (I don't OC; I actually UC'd my videocard so it would run properly with no fan).

I'd go out and buy a brand new tualatin if they would make them again

Zalman 7000Cu or 7700Cu. Use the supplied potentiometer to limit the maximum speed of the fan to suit your taste.
