Hello! I used to visit the AT forums back when I needed help building an overclocked Celeron box. My current PC is not too old (Athlon 64, Radeon x1650), but I think it's time to build a new PC. I've been reading many of the stickies and guides, but I suspect that I need personalized advice because of the intended use of the PC. I've copied the questions that one of the threads suggested everyone answer when asking advice.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

  • - running all variety of games, from DOS to new games
    - video encoding and editing
    - virtualization w/ multiple operating systems
    - storage, no redundancy needed
    - blu-ray viewing
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

Considering that I'd like to start from scratch, I guess it woud be $1500+. Perhaps higher because I live in Canada.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

Canada.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

No.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

No.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

Yes.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

I plan to overclock.

8. WHEN do you plan to build it?

In 2-3 months.

So, where do I start?

at that price, go i7

920
6GB ddr3
x58 mobo
gtx260/HD4870
Corsair 750TX
Pick a case
Blu-ray Drive

(But all that will change completely in 2-3 months, so, lol)

I think you can build a killer system for $1500

For $1000 you can build a nice Intel Core2 or 4 775 socket since Chips and mobos are 1/2-1/3 of the cost of a i7

I would buy from www.newegg.ca

I just built my system 2-3 months ago before the i7s where released for about $1,000
