I would shoot for $1500 for a solid machine. You can do it with less, but there will be compromises

$5000 is a GOOD budget , but if you want the best price/performace ratio I'd say somewhere in the range of $1500 to $2000, and depending on whether or not you're including a monitor, and what type, and likewise for the video card.

Spend what you can safely afford... You can always upgrade later... Gaming systems is all subjective anyways, I have seen people make $500 "gaming systems" and I have made $5000+ gaming systems for myself, somewhere in the middle will surely do anyone fine...

lol im 25 my parents dont give me money

i kinda want to build a whole gaming ocmputer for 1000 but its kinda hard to so i think i will have to spend 1500 i really want a good gaming experience along with a system that will last me for a long time

i want to play fear and quake 4 also ! and maybe unreal 2007 but that is way too far off to build a system for it :-(

"Good gaming experience" and "last for a long time" do not go hand in hand... Gaming always pushes the envelope. Just do your research on your choices and buy as much as you can comfortably afford...

You can stretch your budget a bit if you buy a piece at a time, and if you have components from older computers that you can re-use like monitors....

For example....buy a case and PSU that you like.

Month later, buy a hard drive

Month later, buy a motherboard and ram

Month later, buy a CPU

Then buy a video card that you WANT.

If you're patient you can just buy it gradually.

i kinda want to get a 7800 gt but i think it will be way overkill for me ! i do not play games on super hardcore resoultion i stay at 1024x768

i think i can have a good gaming experince in the resoultion ?

my friend has a 6800 ultra and i play WoW over his house sometimes and his monitor sucks so he is stuck at 1024x768 but the game looks good as hell to me !

but the 6800 ultra will for a good 3 years right ?

K, I'm still pimping a 9800 Pro and it does everything i want + more with the games I play. Probably would do well with HL2 and is nice with D3, but its all my perspective (I play it all on a 25ms Benq LCD too, still don't know what ghosting is either).

Don't ignore buying used bud, but like jdavisomaha said do it in spteps and you will save a bunch of money. Look for sales and the like too.

the 7800gt runs about the same price as the 6800 ultra and performs better, though if you're just interested in 1024x768 a vanilla 6800 should be fine.
