I actually have about 4 green houses within a quarter mile from my house. Though I never thought to ask them about trees, they pretty much just have flowers, at least as far as I can tell so far. I will go in and ask some of them whats up.

Mimosas attract butterflys when they bloom. The tree's very pretty, but not super long lived.

Magnolias do fine here and Tulip trees are native to our area (Carolinian Forests).

I would also recommend the Red Bud: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Redbud

Actually, I'm on the west side of Detroit, Just never updated my profile. About an hour north of the Ohio line.

EDIT: Oh and another interesting tidbit based on your recomendation: I live on a street called Redbud!

My hands-down favorite of the redbud trees is the Oklahoma Redbud:

VERY similar to the eastern redbud. Not sure which one would be best for your climate.

Local greenhouses may not be the venue for your new tree, although they MAY be able to give good advice. Look up nurseries in the yellow pages. I'm sure you'll find some good ones.

LOL

you are even closer to me, since I am in London, Ontario.

any way, red buds are native to our area so it should be an easy tree for you to get.

Bradford Pear
They are good in Ohio (Zones 5-6).
They are kind of weak though and are known for breaking during wind storms.
Most flowering and fruiting trees are though.

Dogwoods are stronger.

Are you near Columbus?

Oakland Nursery and Strader's Nursery are great in the Central Ohio area.
Both usually have Bradford Pears in stock.

Be forwarned... most flowering trees stink while in bloom.

Flowering Kwanzan...These look awesome!
