So I just had a mulberry tree removed from my back yard, the thing was disgusting, dropping 10 million rotting berries all over my house, birds feasted on them and crapped purple, seed filled shit all over our cars and patio, clogged up the gutters, etc etc

Anyways, now there is a gaping whole in the yard that needs to be filled. Wife wants something that flowers, but I dont want anything that has any type of fruit or berry on it. Is there such a tree? Ideally something that flowers in both spring and fall would be kick ass.

ok not really a hole but a wide open area that was once nicely shaded, but now gets a lot of sun. I guess a picture of the "hole" would be a picture of a blue sky, which I'm sure you can find here

How about a magnolia? Don't know if they're hardy for your climate though.

A few bad things about them include the thick leathery leaves and the "lawn mine" seed pods they drop. Step on one barefoot and you'll understand.

Otherwise, there are lots of flowering trees that are fruitless.

Magnoilias are incredible when the bloom. Dogwoods are nice as well.

I was going to recommend this. Absolutely beautiful tree...many here in KY. I planted one this summer, after seeing those in other people's yards for years. Mine has bloomed once already and is in the process of blooming again. Not sure if this is a pattern that all, more mature Magnolias do or not.

There are also a couple of different species often sold with the generic name of "Tulip Tree."

Again, I don't know if any of them will stand the cold winters in Ohio.

Do you have a GOOD local nursery where you live? (as compared to Lowes/Home Depot)

Also, your county extension office may be able to give some good recommendations for your area.

Good recommendations on a GOOD nursery (they'll have folks that really know their stuff and the area) and the agricultural extension.

We've got a Dogwood that I'm rather fond of. I think there are different varieties and some are problem children. Do your homework.

I've got a dwarf weeping cherry, it's great in the spring when it goes through the flowering phase.

go to a nursery and ask them.
Only way to be sure for your climate and soil conditions.

You'll see a lot more different kinds trees online than in your local nursery, but often there is a good reason for this. A lot of trees you'll find online will not do well in your local area even if it's good for your zone.

I have a dwarf crape myrtle in my back yard...sort of. It's barely alive after my fuckhead Mexican neighbors sprayed it with some type of herbicide...(looks like Roundup damage to me)

The tree sits on my side of the property line and they're pretty dirty trees. The wind blows the flowers and berries into their pool. Since they don't filter the pool properly nor maintain the chemicals...the berries and flowers stain the bottom of the pool...
They called a pool guy to look at it, and he basically told them that IF they'd take care of the pool correctly, I could dump a 5 gallon bucket of this shit into the pool every day and it wouldn't hurt anything except of course, clog the filters.

So...they sprayed my 15' high tree with roundup...as well as a couple of my lilacs.

I just heard yesterday that they've moved back to the bay area. (apparently they heard that I was going to have the tree tested, and if it came back positive for herbicide, I was going to prosecute if possible, if not, I was going to take them to small claims court. I know just what neighbor to tell when I want information spread around...

We have one too that's never been pruned and looks really really cool.

But we also have a mulberry tree (ours doesn't have berries though) and they grow to crazy huge sizes in only a few years, so it's likely he wants something that will grow bigger and offer more shade than a crape myrtle.

You have a male mulberry. They just release thier pollen into the air so the females can spew berries all spring and half the summer. I unfortunately had a female.
