+1 for American Crew. Currently using Gillette Flex Hold. I put it in my wet hair and style it, wait for my hair to dry, then comb my fingers through. Doesn't give me the stiff look and keeps my hair feeling soft. But I used American Crew for a good 5 years.

What's good about this stuff is at the end of the day, hair feels normal and not all greased up like normal brands.

+2 For American Crew. The stuff is EXPENSIVE and good, doesn't turn your hair all white when a girl runs her hand over it...been using it for the past 4 years. I usually get the large bottle which lasts me for 1 year.

If you want your hair to stay put for good you could always use ice spiker. The stuff is more a hair glue than a gel. It dries relatively flexible. It will take some scrubbing to get out each night. I used it for a while when I was at a job where I sometimes had to run outside when it was raining and my hard would sometimes get wet. Without shampoo and a good scrubbing you could dive in a pool and your hair wouldn't get messed up.

And yes, you'll want to go with something dry like a paste in order to add volume. Pomade will actually make your hair look thinner than it is.

Classic is a gel (I believe) and Pomade will make your hair shiny and still feel weighted down.

I usually like something that will hold without any shine / stickiness / clumpiness - I used to use Redken Rough Clay, but now I use Bedhead Manipulator - shower, brush teeth, shave, hair product, blow dry - it's by far the most forgiving product I've used (time since hair cut, style, humidity, etc.)

It's expensive, but every now & then target has them for buy 1 get one free. gl.
