I'm tired of waiting for George Martin who seems to have given up on his.

Series' I've read and enjoyed are

Wheel of Time
Raymond Feists Midkemia books
Terry Brookes' Shannara books
Song of Ice and Fire by George Martin
Memory Sorrow andThorn by Tad Williams
Empire series by Raymond Feist and Jenny Wurtis(sp?)

Any recommendations? I'm not really into things like talking animals or books from a first person perspective.

Glen Cook's Tyranny of the Night series is pretty good. Not as good as Cook's The Black Company but still good. The Black Company is written first person so maybe not your thing.

The Merlin Codex series by Robert Holdstock is also good. His Mythago Wood series is excellent.

Dark Tower series by Stephen King
Discworld series by Terry Pratchett - Fantasy with lots of humor. Also not quite a series like the ones you listed. over 28 books in the same world. Some books mention things that happen in previous books.
Night Watch series - Modern fantasy
Conan series by Robert E. Howard
Solomon Kane series by Robert E. Howard

So many to choose from....hmmm

Farseer trilogy + The Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb

Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks

The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher for something a little different

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, if you haven't read this yet, do it now.

Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson (so-so, good if you're struggling to find new books to read)

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson (superior to the Mistborn trilogy imo)

The Gentleman Bastard Sequence by Scott Lynch (only the first two are out but they have been stellar imo)

Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson (one of my all time favorite series, ever. Not completed yet)

The Red Wolf Conspiracy by Robert V.S. Redick (really great opening book of a new series)

and there are a ton I'm forgetting at the moment but it's late and I should be studying for an exam...oh fuck!

If you're at all interested in sci-fi check out anything by Iain M. Banks. He's one of my favorite authors in that area.

The sword of truth by Terry Goodkind. Simply amazing, and it's complete so you won't have to wait for a conclusion!

Farseer
Liveship Traders
Tawny Man

Got to read em all and they are very good. Was about to make some remark about how they are at least finished compared to Martin but looking at the wiki page she is writing another series set in the same world called The Rain Wild Chronicles and the first book Dragon Keeper will be available in the US on Jan 26. SWEET!!!

It was great, dragged a bit there at the end, but not as bad as Jordan.

Also check out David Eddings, he's got alot of great work out, a couple series, most of it set in the same world and alot of the books stand alone pretty well.

R. Scott Bakker, the Prince of Nothing trilogy

This is the most deep, complex and amazing fantasy series I have read in a long time. The only problem is that it leaves you wanting more (a second trilogy is in the works, book 1 is out).

No way dude, he claimed all three were written and would be published one volume per year. That was about 3 years ago and he's still not done with book 2. GRRM redux. Avoid until he puts out. (Yeah, he has a sad story, parents died I think, and I'm sympathetic, but I still wouldn't recommend anyone start reading his stuff at the moment.)

I read elantris and mistborn1 to see what WoT might look like. I am not pleased with BS's writing. His ideas are good but his prose is amateurish at best, and the exposition is so clumsily handled. I'll read the final WoT books of course, but I the only reason BS was selected is because he writes lightning quick, not because he's anything good. I'd have rather waited for someone with a lot of writing talent to finish the series off, but I guess those types of writers are busy writing their own quality work and didn't want to get caught up in the WoT project.

Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson (one of my all time favorite series, ever. Not completed yet)

A must read for anyone who likes fantasy. Unparalleled. I'm about to start book 6, figure if I read one every 2-3 months by the time I finish bk 9 the last one should be right around the corner.

I agree with this almost completely.

the first book in the series was unlike anything I had ever read - simply fantastic 10/10.

it started going downhill slowly, but the next 2 books were still really good.

I haven't read the final book, Confessor(i think), but the books leading up this the finale, IMHO, were no where near the same calibre.

R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt books were really good.

Terry Brooks Magic Kingdom for Sale/Sold! series was pretty good, too.

Not "good" in the traditional sense, but I loved these when I was a teen/pre-teen - Fred Saberhagen's "Sword" books - there are a bunch of them in a couple of different series (Book of Swords series, Book of Lost Swords etc..). These are great, very light reads with come cool ideas for the powers of the swords.

Podcast D.J. Steve Boyett has a book called Areil - you can download the first chapter from his website.

If you like good, science based Sci Fi, I'd recommend the Gibraltar series (Gibraltar Earth, Gibraltar Sun - the 3rd book is upcoming) by Michael McCollum.

I've heard great things about Red Mars/BlueMars/Green Mars series by Kim Stanely Robinson

I'm reading the first book of the Xanth Seriers by Piers Anthony. It's pretty good, but probably not what you are looking for.

Although it's not new you have to read David Eddings Belgariad series if you have not done so already

The already mentioned Malazan series

The Black Company books by Glen Cook.

I'm into the second book of the Winds of the Forelands series by David Coe and like it so far. Not quite as dark as GRR Martin or Glen Cook, but darker than typical epic fantasy.

Sword of Truth starts well, later books were not as good. He kind of beats you to death with his political leanings, which I don't disagree with, but it gets old. The Dresden Files are my current favorites, and Codex Alera isn't bad. I loved Saberhagens Swords books, but I didn't really care for the last one. Any of Michael Moorcocks Champion Eternal series are not bad, but very gloomy. I know you said no talking animals, but Alan Dean Fosters Spellsinger books are very humorous, they might tickle you funny bone.

This is my vote. I don't think there is anything out there like it. The second book of the series Deadhouse Gates really sets the tone for the series.

I liked the Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card. Some of the books aren't as good as the first few but they were enjoyable.

Edit: I was at work and thought that had a nice ring to it. I guess I should have just gone to Amazon and checked! LOL...
