Why not just buy an DC-AC inverter? It wouldn't take a high-wattage unit for your needs and so would be a relatively affordable alternative.

Inverter's the way to go. That's what I always used in my vehicles. Not only will it power the laptop, you can use it for other things also. If you want to get crafty, you could get a high wattage inverter, and hide it in the vehicle. Then hardwire an A/C outlet somewhere nifty, and run a microwave, fridge, TV, or whatever with it.
Worst case scenario: You get stranded on Mercury, far from any gas station.Originally posted by: Clair de Lune

Can the car really handle all those? I really doubt it can run a fridge, tv, or microwave, let alone together.

Another vote for an inverter. I have a 400 watt - 2 plug inverter that I use to plug in laptops, cell phones, GPS units.
