for under $200.00. I currently have an older epson 640 and it does a pretty good job. However, I am giving my computer (the one in my sig) to my brother because I built a new one and I am considering just getting a better quality printer.
So give me some recommendations. I'd like it to be able to print 5x7 or maybe 8x10 pics. Is this doable for under $200.00?

I'm a big fan of HP deskjets because they print photo's very nicely without having to tweak the settings. I have an 880 (about 2 years old). Also, the cartridges are expensive, but they last a LONG time.

A $200 HP printer should print photos just great.

That's funny cause I was just tellin my friend about how i printed a cnn.com webpage in full HP color glory, and I'm always amazed at how good it looks. I have a going on 2 years old HP 812C, which I got for $150, and it is fantastic. My friend was raving about his 722C, a 4 year old printer. You can't go wrong with HP. I hear that their 900 series printers are unbelievable as well. I will be keeping my current printer until it breaks or I need to print color photos, the quality is that good.

I have the Epson C80 and I find it slow and noisy. I have the HP 960 as well and it is faster, quieter, and has more ram. Both do nice color prints.

I have always liked HP printers. If there is one thing that Hewlett Packard knows, it's printing. I have a 694C (Old, but does the job). My father has a 9xxC (Can't remember which). His printer does an excellent job of printing photos. He has had some pictures developed on a CD. I was surprised as to how good the prints looked. Granted, nothing can really come close to photo quality yet. However, I feel HP gives you printers that will get you as close as you can right now.

Epson C60, C80 or the HP PhotoSmart 1115. The best prices can be found in the Hot Deals forum or at your local CostCo or Staples.com after coupon or Dell.com after coupon.

I have an HP 882 that has never given me a problem, it prints fantastic and is pretty fast for an older printer. The newer 800, 900 and 1000 series are even better. Stay away from the 600 series as they as so slow you want to kill yourself. I usually dont recommend epson for 2 reasons (they print great BTW): 1. The print heads are permanent, so if they get clogged its a bitch to clean, with HP, when you change the cartridge you change the heads. 2. When will epson realize we want paper trays? I hate having paper vertical, that is why epson always get dust in the works and the reason why the heads clog!

but in epsons defence, they do print very good. Its just I get more overall reliability with HP.

Don't mess with that inkjet / bubblejet nonsense - those things are made to be thrown away. The high end ones are the exception, but if you want to spend that much, why not go laser?

My vote is the Samsung ML-1210. Black and white laser with good performance for under $200. I got mine at buy.com here.

It's been running flawlessly for 6 months which is more than I can say for any Ink or Bubble jet I've owned...

I have a Brother 1440 which worked great for me in Windows 98, but is giving me problems in XP. If you have Win98 or earlier, and don't need a color printer - go with Brother. Awesome quality and speed that can sometimes be found for around $210 (after coupons).

Thanks but I need to be able to print color.

Ok so out of the epson c80, HP PhotoSmart 1115, or HP 960c? Which one is better at printing. Forget noise, speed, etc. I just want one that can do regular black text as close to laser as possible and still do excellent near-photo qualtiy.

BTW we have a canon at work and it can't even get straight lines right. But the color does look good. I thin kit's a c600 or something like that.

If your thinking about going the HP way, get the 960 instead of the 940 because the only black cartridge the 940 takes is a much smaller one (definate means of selling ink).

I'm a big fan of the HP 900 series printers. Their fast, quiet, and the print quality is really good (at least as far as I can tell). With staples coupons you should be able to get a heck of a deal on one.

Just went thru this question. I seem to be the computer guy of the family.. and well. last month non only did I need a new printer, but so did my mom and sister.. so I was tasked with getting all 3. they were more interested in price, and although that was factor for me, I was tired of using the 'cheap' printer that i had (canon bjc 3000 & 6000). so I opted for a HP Photosmart 1115, and got them the Epson C60. got all three from DELL, when they were running their 10% sale. the epson ended up costing (after $20 rebate) around $60. and the HP after the great $75 rebate from HP (I purchased a digital camera for Xmas, it was a fuji), so it cost me about $75.
I have been refilling my ink cartriges for over 5 years. saves me money.. so one word about the EPSON C 60 or C80.. they put a chip in the cartridge, that when it runs out of ink it deactivates the cartridge, you can't refill it.. and if take the cartidge out of the printer, for any reason, even if it is not empty, it no longer works. most computer shows sell refill kits, and devices that will make the espon cartidges reactivate, but those devices are not available for the C60 or 80, yet. where as the HP 1115, uses cartidges that HP has been using, and still uses in many of their printers, so refill kits are available. Not sure, but I think the EPSON does not house the ink jet heads in the cartidges (is that right??), but HP does. what does that mean? well, when you replace the cartidges on the HP, you fresh, new heads. and even if you refill them, they as for long time (about 2-5 refills). and the HP has a self aligning feature, no printing out an alignment sheet, where you feed number back into the printer application, thus making your heads in alignment. NOPE, HP does it itself, every time you print. very nice. the best feature of the printer, in my opinion. and you can tell just by looking at the HP's, they are made to a higher quality then others.

did that help?

Not to confuse you, but I recently bought the Canon S500 and I think it's a great printer. Plus, the cartridges are among the least expensive.

Go for the HP 1115 if you're a CostCo member they're going to have this on sale for $169 after $30 off instant coupon in a week or two. Check the coupon book they mailed you, if you lost or don't know where yours is. Visit CostCo's membership services and tell them you never received one.

$169 is a great price for this EXCELLENT printer.
