What's a good RTS game nowadays?

I haven't played any great RTS (real-time strategy) games lately. Age of Empires, C&C, Warcraft, Starcraft, etc... were the best of the best, and I had lots of fun.

Anyone has any recommendation on the latest and greatest? I'd like to relive the mayhem that once was zurg zurg...

You should just wait until Starcraft II comes out. Every other RTS game out now will be deemed inferior when it does, so there is no reason for you to waste your money. It's kind of like how only fools buy phones other than the iPhone, knowing full well that the iPhone is an Apple product, and is therefore superior to every other phone on the planet. Just wait for Starcraft II. You wont regret it. Everyone knows this.

But every RTS that was out when Starcraft came out wasn't, so why would this be the case? I have a gaming mag from 1998 with a review of Starcraft. They rated it B+. Fun, but nothing new or special. It will be exactly the same with the sequel.

Dawn of War 2.

Some balance issues, but relic regularly releases patches and updates to address those issues.

Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander. Those seem to be the two best RTS at the moment, imo, and they both lie on complete opposite ends of the RTS spectrum.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Company of Heroes yet (dammit, Chriscross types faster than I do!)--perhaps the most universally loved of the current/recent-past crop of RTS titles. There are plenty of others, of course: SupCom and DoW2 have already been mentioned, and there's World in Conflict and Red Alert 3 and Demigod and...

Just get thee hence to thine demo outlet!

In my opinion Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, plus its expansion packs, namely Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm, for me it's the best RTS game/series in years. I play it nearly every day and I completed the original campaign probably a dozen times.

Red Alert 3 is good. It's nothing original, it's classic C&C to the bone just with new graphics, but it's a fun game. The co op single player campaign is the most fun I've had in an RTS in a long time.

You seriously need to chill with that Apple crap cus it's stupid and iPhone sucks. Plus you have no idea what you're talking about with RTS's. There are many great RTS's out.

These are the best out:

Company of Heroes
Supreme Commander

He's obviously trolling. Everyone knows this. But I am getting sick of theflyingpig's obvious, stupid troll posts. Everyone agrees with me.

These are excellent games. I highly recommend buying all of them. STEAM has them all if I'm not mistaken.
I made the foolish decision to buy them one at a time right when they came out. I had lots of fun, but installing all of them each with their own code is a serious pain in the butt.

Dawn of War 1 + Winter Assault + Dark Crusade + Soulstorm
Dawn of War 2
Company of Heroes + Opposing Fronts + Tales of Valour

Personally out of the above I own all except Tales of Valour expansion pack so my recommendations would include everything except ToV which I cannot recommend as I have not played it.

All should be available on Steam, probably as bundles with appropriate bulk purchase discounts but I recommend shopping around for DVD prices... Some of Steam's prices can be unfavourable in my experience.

Ah 3v3 zero clut thats always fun. Company of heros is the most fun online at the moment, plenty of people playing, dont know about AoE i thought the 3rd one was ok but i never went online, C&C is dead and unfortunately there is no new warcraft RTS game on the horizon.

Starcrafts still got tons of people playing it, UMS maps, money maps etc theyre all still there, but starcraft II is coming in Q1 2010 hopefully so that will be the new best RTS game.

That is a very cool demo of the single player in SCII, it looks awesome!

Try the Sins of a Solar Empire demo. It is a 4x-RTS game that won a couple Game of the Year awards. It has far less micromanagement than a normal RTS but all (if not more) of the strategic considerations. (You'll still need to micromanage your ships if you're playing against human opponents; those kinds of tactics are very important.) It's also awesome for competitive online multiplayer against other people in team games (up to 5v5). (The games normally last between 45 minutes and 1:45 online.)

Here's a good YouTube video. Note that much of what this guy has to say is inaccurate ("it's not really an RTS game", "you won't spend much time fighting"), but it still shows the game.

Just waiting for someone to post a request for him being banned in forum issues.

I really like World in Conflict. Though that me be more considered a Tactical Strategy game due to the lack of resource gathering.

DOW2 and CoH hands down. Nothing else even comes close. C&C 3 is also great, but pales in comparison.

World in conflict is not really an RTS. ; )

Neither is MW2 which is not an RTS at all.
