Try some functional languages like scheme or lisp.... lets you do some pretty neat things...
Prolog is kinda cool too....

The entire language is based around a Stack. Generally used for embedded systems and robotics, but can be used to make applications as well. Look up the book Thinking Forth.

I bought that book many years back(10+) and the Language looked real cool. Unfortunetly I never really got into it.

ruby.

ruby seems very interesting.. like a shift in programming paradigm or something

They seem pretty damn similar to me. Neither are really revolutionary, just evolutionary.

I second the Perl suggestion. I don't even like it (I prefer stricter programming languages where the compiler and IDE can actually help catch mistakes instead of make clueless guesses like they do in Perl, Python, Ruby, etc.) and still use it constantly for glue and simple apps.

I suspect the size of CPAN (repository of scripts/modules/libraries) absolutely dwarfs what's available for Python and Ruby as well. Nearly every time I've had to write something in Perl there's been something in CPAN to make implementation easier.

Delphi, aka Object Oriented Pascal.

If you call this obscure, then this would get my vote.

I wouldn't call it obscure. Pretty mainstream I guess. Never heard of Borland Delphi?
Damn fine language but I wouldn't reccomend it for this sort of summer (uh, I meant semester). It's not fundamentally different than any of the really mainstream languages and, from what I gather, it's only really obscure in North America for some reason.

It's really nice but you are right, it's unusual here but very common in Europe.

If you want to have the chick-attracting status of carrying a pocket protector, you could always learn FORTRAN. To get the full experience, pick a flavor pre-FORTRAN 77.

All this talk has made me wish for a semester where I could just forget about the traditional languages and stretch my brain by learning something completely different :sigh;
