Whats a normal safe temperature for a Tbird 1ghz?

I put a chrome orb on my tbird, but in the bios, it goes up to 60 degrees centegrade...

That seems awfully hot. I tried to use the GlobalWin Fop32, but I had a hell of a time trying to get the clip on.

Any suggestions

Depends on your MB. If that's a KT7 UL and later bios, its pretty high. On an A7V, a bit high, but could still be okay.

on a MSI board, absolutely too high.

Also, what speed t-bird, as the C-orb is only adequate up to 950. Effective to about 850.

I also had a problem with the Fop32. I actually ruined an MSI-Pro2-a trying to do it. I finally was able to get it on and I'm now running 35-40 C on my T-Bird 1Ghz (According to BIOS).

Its a KT7a with a 1ghz... that is just too damn hot... I also have a globalwin fop32, i am going to try that, and see if its better than the chrome orb

There's no question that the FOP32-1 is better. THe orbs "cheat" socket-thermistor readings...

So in many reviews, you see good orb performance, but actual cpu performance is generally pretty darn poor.

Mike

p.S. is it an FOP32-1 or an FOP32?

I didn't use compound, just the pad that came on the bottom of the heatsink. (chrome orb)

I believe it is the fop32-1

Why bother using Arctic silver on a C-orb/1ghz t-bird? Not worth it, as the orb can barely keep cpu temps within reasonable limits.

im with a retail heatsink/fan gonna get a better one this weekend.. but my cpu runs around 30 C idle (or low performance appications) but it jumps to max 46C on 100 percent performance

I run a 1ghz on a abitkt7 with a chrome orb no problems. I did take that pos thermal pad off and smear a pretty generous helping of thermal paste over the processor (The first time I did it I did a crappy job, had to reapply cause of overheating). Now I have no problems. I'm not overclocking and I don't think I'd recommend it. I run about 29-31C idle (Via HM) and 49-53 in games. Not too bad. I haven't had too many complaints about the chrome orb except my arm was damn sore after I spent 30 minutes trying to file off the corner so it'd fit on my mobo.

Try this cooler Here. It is on sale, it is bigger heatsink, it fits the Abit KT7-RAID, and the clip is much better to use. You cannot beat that. Oh! The fan is 7000rpm too.

i'm new to the socket a setups....so i'm not up to speed in regards to the cooling setups either for them. currently i have a 1 ghz t-bird, on an abit kt7-raid using a basic chrome orb at around 5200 rpm i believe. question: is the heatsink supposed to come in contact with the cpu or mount correctly with a very slight gap in between? if there is supposed to be that gap then i ask, should the amount of thermal compound i add to the bottom of the heatsink be enough so that it comes in contact with the cpu?

all help is much appreciated.

There is not supposed to be a gap, and with a heatsink with so little leeway as the C-orb, a gap is asking for cpu trouble.
