Just want to get an idea of what other people set theirs at over the winter before i yell at my roommate for keeping it too low or OFF when its freezing outside. (idiot)

Im also assuming you arent changing the temp frequently during the day (like turning it down when your away), just one steady temperature to always keep the house at.

I have been setting it at 65, which i dont think is that bad. Also keep in mind that the windows are awful in my house, and even though it may read 65 where the thermostat is, anywhere away from the middle of the house and near a window is much colder.

I set mine to off, but this is Louisiana, so I guess it never gets much lower than 45F or so all winter. I love it, honestly.

Due to some drafty windows, we keep ours at 72, otherwise it gets very cold (because of the distance between the thermostat and places the windows let the cold in). Luckily we've already ordered new windows and they're scheduled to be replaced within the next 6 weeks. Hopefully after that we can knock it down to around 68.

64 while at work (I walk back home during lunch so I don't want it too cold) and 68 - 69 when at home

jesus christ where do you live?

MD. If I weren't moving at all, I'd probably set it to 60F. 56F is better for moving, and if I were doing real work, I'd want it even cooler. Last year was so warm I didn't use central heat at all. I burned wood on the coldest days, but usually didn't do anything. It got down to 48F which was a bit cold for my taste, but it didn't last. 50F is as low as I'd want to go for days at a time.

I'm in the Midwest.
I'm old & cold.
74-76 works best for me, but it can get to 80+ with the fireplace & I'm very comfortable.

My thermostat usually stays set on 65-68, having it be cooler when I sleep.

Downstairs is set between 72° - 74° during the day, 69° at night.
Upstairs is usually set to around 72° during the day and 74° - 76° at night.

We have gas heat downstairs and heat pump (terrible) upstairs.

I'm sitting in my 59 degree house feeling uncomfortable thinking about how hot your house must feel.

60F at night or when we are out. 66-68F when we are home. My natural gas bill averages only $80-100 in the winter so I'm not concerned with keeping the temperature too low.

We keep ours at 68 to 70 when we're home. You should crunch the numbers then sit down with your roommate. It probably isn't as expensive as he thinks it is to heat the house.

seems reasonable to me. Out thermostat can be programmed, but havent really taken the time to do anyting with it yet. If this kid is gonna turn the heat OFF when its almost 20 out, id hate to find out his low/night setting.

Programming it would probably take < 5 minutes.

anything below 64 is too cold for a house. i think some people are being macho or have bad thermostats.

im usually around 68-70. there is a pretty small window between too cold and too hot when youre trying to be in your house, because sometimes youre moving around and sometimes youre just sitting there still watching tv. i dont have enough to circulation to keep my limbs fluid at 64, unless im moving around. and at 75 i can lay on the floor naked and still start sweating.

My no heat thing last year was for macho purposes, or something I guess :^D

What happened was it got into January, and I didn't need the heat all, so I said fsck it, let's see if we can go all winter without using gas. It never got that cold. I needed a fire a few times, and I wasn't the happiest at 48F, but it wasn't bad, and I made the winter without using gas. I'd do it again if the circumstances came up. It builds character :^D

I heat with coal, and since I cut and split quite a few cord of firewood this summer, I may even supplement that heat with a wood stove in the basement. When not home, I cut it back to low. When home, whatever feels comfortable, so it varies a bit with the weather. Anywhere between 50's and 90's. I recall when I was home for a "snow day" - too cold for the buses and for students to be outside (-20's F), I said "F U Mother Nature! You've got nothing on me!" And tried to see if I could get the house above 100F. I got it to 97.
