Whats after am3+ chips?

I have the opportunity to get an amd x4 640 thats unlocked to 6 cores. Its an am3 chip which from my understanding many boards can support both am3 and am3+. What my question really is...Is since this is an older chip will there be any upgrade path without needing to buy a different mobo? I know this may be guesswork but there also might be news and info on amd's future plans. The main thing I really like about amd is the backwards compatibility. Also are unlocked amd cpu's stable?

Unlocked CPUs either work stable or work not stable. Run a few benches, you will know what I mean. I have a couple of AM3 CPUs unlocked and they been running fine, however, I had one that didn't work as intended. So, 3 chips = 66% success rate.

AMD flagship FX 8350, the one that will replace the current flagship in the AMD world known as FX 8150, will enter in production in Q3 2012. We don’t know if it can make it for a launch in the same quarter, but it looks like that is the plan.

Currently the new FX processor is expected as an engineering sample, and AMD tells its partners that this is expected to happen in early Q2 2012 and by early Q3 2012 it should get to production candidate sample stage.

It all goes well in Q3 2012 AMD enters production and launching this production whenever it feels like it has enough of them. AMD FX 8350 is based on eight Vishera 32nm cores that will support Enhanced AMD turbo core technology, DDR3 1866 and fit the same AM3+ socket. At this time AMD doesn’t mention any clocks.

It replaces FX 8150 clocked at 3.6GHz with 8 cores, 16MB cache and turbo ability to jump to 4.2GHz in needed. This one is based on 32nm Zambezi desktop bulldozer core. AMD FX8350 should upgrade the performance of AMD top category and Vishera cores are promising some better performance at the same clock.

In any case AMD top notch processor the FX 8150 is selling for a quite affordable €230.

What comes after am3+ is anyone's guess. Piledriver is supposed to be am3+ compatible but they said the same thing about bulldozer and it was a bunch of lies.

Don't believe anything you hear in terms of rumors from amd's pr. They are pathological liars.

Piledriver is supposed to be am3+ compatible but they said the same thing about bulldozer and it was a bunch of lies.

My AM3 board supports Bulldozer processors.

My am3 board does not support bulldozer, not that I really care. I will be going Intel with my next build if I even buy another pc again. I have a feeling arm is going to take over and we will all be using tablets in 5 years.

Quite a few AM3 boards support Bulldozer.

Yeah but they all came out right before bulldozer was launched and are basically unbranded am3+ boards. Anyone who bought an older am3 board thinking they could upgrade to bulldozer was lied to by amd pr. My response to amd's lack of honesty and bad products is to no longer support them.

You have a valid point, I have a 890 based Gigabyte board that also doesn't support Bulldozer, no bios updates since 8/2010.

AMD's upcoming 1090FX / 1070 chipsets are suppose to be socket AM3+ and supposedely not support PCI-E 3.0.

This makes them pointless from an upgrade standpoint since the 990FX / 970 chipsets were just rebranded 890FX / 870 chips with some electrical tweaks and added BIOS support for nVidia SLI.

They probably won't even be available until Q4 when Piledriver launches so there is no point in waiting. Just get a 9XX AM3+ board now for that Athlon X4 640 chip.

I'm betting they only released the FM1 athlons was because of the poor yields so they decided to sell some chips that couldn't cut it as graphics disabled athlons.

Beyond AM3+ AMD hasn't said much with regards to the desktop playground. They did plan on merging everything onto FM2 and I haven't seen any non-APU desktop chips planned after Vishera. This isn't exactly a bad move, as Intel has already done that with Sandy Bridge. Streamline chips and platform.

2011 doesn't exist to me. It's an ugly red-headed stepchild that couldn't cut it as a server part. Sorry, but it's true. Least 1366 made some damn sense

An AMD X4 640 cannot be unlocked to 6-Core. Only chip that can do that is the 960T.

I had the X4 640 before my current chip, so who told you it was unlockable?

The seller says its unlockable to x6 1040t . The chips have already been tested to see if it can be unlocked. Voltages have also been checked too as its overclocked to 3.5. I just wanted to check to see if its stable and if I might have any possible upgrade path.

The E0 stepping of the X4 640 is actually based on a Thuban die. I haven't heard of them being unlocked before, but I don't see why it's not possible.
