Seriously though, what is a tablet going to be used for in 5 years that it can't be used for now?

HD gaming? No
CAD? No
HD image manipulation. No
Rendering? No

The answer are "yes" to everything, of course. Could PC's do all of these years ago? Yes. They just do it better today. Tablets 5 years from now will probably be powerful enough, they'll just still be weaker than what could be achieved in a larger box.

And what good would a tablet be for things like CAD and image editing? It would be pretty clumsy to make precise movements unless your fingertips are smaller than the ends on a toothpick. Screen realistate would also be an issue. While the tablets of tomorrow may be powerful enough for such tasks, that doesn't mean they should be used.

Just hook a keyboard and a mouse to the thing and away you go. For most cad situations you don't need a beefy system. For 3d work you would, but 90% of people do 2d work.

Make your mind up you are contradicting yourself.

Stick a keyboard and a mouse on it and you have a laptop.

Oh and by the way excuse my ignorance, I only know 3 or 4 people who use CAD and they all use 3D.

Sure in 5 years time a tablet might be capable of running todays CAD but guess what in 5 years time a more hardware intensive version of CAD will have been developed that takes advantage of 2017s laptops processing power. The way I see things evolving is mobile phones becoming a lot more easily integrated with laptops so you use your phone while you need to be ultra portable and your laptop while in the office/at home whatever. Tablets will still be what they are today, pretty expensive toys that some people sacrifice productivity to use for work (yes I know some people really find them more useful than a laptop but they are either a tiny minority of tablet sales or are deluding themsleves because they think they look cool).

Actually an ipad3 would be an incredible tool for things like heavy construction. It would allow people to pan and zoom cad drawings so they could get a good look at complicated construction details. They could even mark up the drawings in real time and instantly show the architect or engineer what they need help with.

While the iPad 3's pixel count is incredibly impressive, the screen itself is far too small to be useful for any sort of CAD work. I can tell you from personal experience that pixel count alone will not suffice. You really need a big monitor with a lot of pixels and preferably another monitor for procrastinating. Err, I mean browsing

Like I said maybe some people might find uses for tablets but it seems funny to me how tablets are selling in such great numbers and people are making up "uses" for them on the fly. Sure there are plenty of cool things you could do with them but it doesn't change the fact that they are toys for big kids.

Buisiness class laptops were developed work longer and cooler than "normal" laptops.

Gpus wre developed because there were specific tasks that they could perform that a cpu took way to long to do.

Tablets were created because there is always a sucker out there with a spare £500 on their credit card to spend on something new.

Wow I can read an ebook on it/playgames on it/piss around drawing on it, well guess what you can do all that on a laptop/ebook reader I have seen first hand the limits of what tablets can do and trust me "complicated construction details" would leave an Ipad crying for mercy.

I read the papers and I read forums like these and I have lost count of how many people say "oh yeah I used my ipad for a few weeks now it just sits on the coffee table looking pretty" sooner or later all the sheep out there are going to realise that tablets are a gimmick.

Puppies with all due respect I am one of the top cad designers in my city and I have been doing cad for well over 10 years and have drawn large buildings on systems a fraction as powerful as an ipad3. So long as they are 2d drawings I am telling you it is possible.

wow, this thread went from AM3+ to ipads
I know, i know! Well at least i got a few good answers before everything fell apart. I guess if I want to know more about my situation/question i will start a thread about ipad3 and let that steamroll into amd's future plans and upgrading potential.

The E0 stepping of the X4 640 is actually based on a Thuban die. I haven't heard of them being unlocked before, but I don't see why it's not possible.

Dont you just love how stuff like that happens without us knowing about it? Is there an article on any tech site that covers this??

45nm production ended in December of last year according to AMD's own slides. It would have been nice to hear, though. I'd have picked up a chip or two had I known

I just bought a pair of X2-3800 socket 939 chips off ebay for $15 apiece. They are still around. 45nm will still be around in 2016. Probably also $15.

For a decade many pilots have carried an EFB.

In the Electronic Flight Bag, one can put all the manuals, drawings, checkout proceedures, emergency checklists, basically everything a pilot or even a technician could dream of having on his aircraft all in one handy little portable widget.

It really looks just like a clunky tablet.

^^

but they keep their sockets for a long time, compared to Intel who changes it up every two years.

atleast ivy bridge will be compatible with 1155

it's not like 775 was around forever or anything, fm1 had a good run though:hmm:
