It IS hot if you have an open mind.
This DOES NOT take up any additional vertical space- It shares the address bar and if you're using the small icons without labels it makes a very useful addition.

It IS A LOT BETTER than just the google bar and it has a LOT MORE FEATURES.

I use the google toolbar and dont know how life would be without it. Well not quite, but I do use it everyday as a search tool instead of opening the website and searching that way. This is a good deal.

You can set IE to use many search engines as the default, so you just type the search phrase in the address bar without ANY add-on toolbars/etc. Unfortunately I don't remember the registry key to do that at the moment, but, uhhhhh, you can Google search for it.

Open search tab in IE -->Customize-->Press autosearch settings button-->select Google Sites

Thanks Growltiger, I have been wondering when Microsoft would integrate the best search engine into their own toolbar. I had done the registry hack before in Win98, but it didn't work for me in XP.

Opera has some nice features built in. For example, if you type "g motherboard" in the address bar, it will automatically search for motherboard using google. Type "a motheroard" it will use "all the web." Type "e motherboard" will search ebay. There are a ton more options. Also, right click on a word in a web page and you can look up that word in the dictionary or do a search.

Glad you like it, I forgot to mention that if you right click your toolbar you can
temporarily hide it as well Did you know the f 11 trick?

The TweakUI utility allows you to customize your Windows environment. One of its great features is the ability to create custom search prefixes in IE, similar to what OTR mentioned in Opera. I've set up various prefixes that allow me to search using google web search, google usenet search, dictionary.com, etc. For example, if I want to look up the definition for facetious, I'd just type "d facetious" in my address bar, hit Enter, and have the dictionary.com definition page of facetious returned.

It's a great convenience. I can't imagine going back to the days when I didn't have it.

Why do you hate it? I think people like it because then the whole page with all the content fits on a single screen at a resolution of atleast 800x600 or 1024x768 or higher.

To make Google your default search engine from the Internet Explorer address bar, do the following:

Cut and paste the following text into Notepad.
