What's considered to be "above average" internet speed nowadays in the US?

About to jump on board Verizon Fios and can't decide between 25, 50, 75, or 100 mbps

each plan is about $10 different per month

right now I'm leaning to 50, but wonder if 75 is that much better/needed

Thoughts?

You get what you need with the ability to increase the speed without penalty

25-50mb/s is more than enough for a single user with multiple devices. My household has 4 people living there who currently have a 30-day running average of approximately 11.2mb/s down and 3.3mb/s up - in addition to running a PLEX server that is almost always serving approximately 3+ 20mb/s streams to others outside my house so they pull a consistent 8-18mb/s of my upload most evenings and I've still never seen a speedtest run under 600mb/s of a 1gigabit sequential.

I pay $80/m for this: http://imgur.com/YfOGryx

And it's worth noting that I'm currently downloading Windows 10 from Microsoft @ 292mb/s or so, while running the speedtest through a TeamViewer upload at roughly 4mb/s.

I'd consider 25mbps to be the minimum for decent single streaming/use. However, on Comcast at least, the non-promotional price difference between the first (25mbps) and second tier (50mbps) is negligible. (like $60 vs $65 per month).

So...I'd consider 25mpbs average. 50+mpbs would be above average.

I have 50. Actual speeds are significantly slower using Wifi, so take that into account.

We have 25 in our house with 2-3 people using the internet at the same time with no problems.

Remember no matter how fast your connection is it will not make the other end go any faster.

Got a free bump up to 60/5 for $53/mo. They have a 12/1 package for $25 but I need more than that 1 up or I'd jump to that.

12 is plenty to handle two streams at once, that's really the most internet I use.

And I was feeling so good about having an upgrade to 50Mbit/s for free.

I used to have 10 Mbps and I just upgraded to 50 Mbps recently for the same price and I did not feel any difference IMO. It is only for me and I do not do much streaming/uploading/gaming. Just YouTube, and regular internet stuffs.

Depending on what you do, you might not see it. I am getting around 125mbps right now and with just two people on it, it is great (when it works... thanks Comcast). We both stream stuff and it looks fine.

According to Akamai's State of the Internet report, the average US connection speed as of Q4 2014 was only 11mbps.
https://www.akamai.com/us/en/multim...amai-state-of-the-internet-report-q4-2014.pdf

I have a 25mbps connection at home with 2-3 people using it. Seems fine. That's the cap for VDSL. Was the only service with umlimited data at the time. I can get faster service still with unlimited data through the cable company, but it's significantly more expensive.

I just got notice that mine is being increased to 75mbps for free. I thought maybe the US was starting to improve the overall speed but it doesn't look like that is the case

Pfft back in the 2000's I was blazin with 1.5, 3, 5 mbps Internet. Now i have 15 or 25 with FiOS and i can't imagine the need for any more and there are 3 people in my house. Maybe if i get like 2 or 3 kids that are bandwidth whorz, but i'll probably just limit their bandwidth.

I get 30 down and I hate life because a friend in the same city gets 955 down. It is all relative.

I pay $70 a month for what I thought was about 30 internet units/second by Xfinity. I just did a test and it seems I get 55 now. I never noticed the increase. Point is that it doesn't seem to matter much as long as I'm in that range.

I haven't even thought about internet speeds for quite a few years now.

I did the $10 bump to 50 honestly I don't notice a difference. I only have 2 or 3 things on the internet at any given time.

With lot of people having more than 100mbps and even gigabit these days I'd say above average is probably like 50.

Here in Canada, maybe 10? I'm lucky enough to be one of the few that can get 50mbps down and 30 up as the phone company rolled out fibre here a few years back. Only overhead cable plant though, I feel bad for those that have underground service as they can't get it.

Though unlimited is more important to me than the speed. Rather have a slower unlimited connection than a fast one that's capped. But I have the best of both worlds as my 50/30 is uncapped. I can go up to 250/30 if I wanted to but I'm happy with 50.
