clutch in
shift to neutral
clutch out
clutch in
shift to whatever gear you want to shift to

At least that's what I think it is. I'm 95% sure.

Kntx got it.

It saves wear on synchronizers, especially on the downshifts, because you blip the throttle while in neutral. It uses the engine to spin the up the input shaft of the tranny, instead of the synchro, which, if you?re shifting too quickly, doesn?t always get the job done in time, resulting in a nice ?crunch.?

had to do it on my friend's 1948 ford

Back in the olden days, transmissions didn't have synchros. Double clutching was just part of regular driving.

This only has advantages on downshifting right? That's what I thought, and it didn't make sense to why you would downshift in a drag race.

dont need to double clutch anymore, esp. in your new camaro.

only thing I use it for is downshifting, and only when cruising slowly or decellerating quickly from high speeds, to prevent such a surge of rpm's on downshift

<<clutch in
shift to neutral
clutch out
clutch in
shift to whatever gear you want to shift to

<<100% correct>>

Sorry, 100% WRONG.

Here's what it is:
Take off in 1st
Push clutch in to shift
Rev engine to match trasmission speed-can do while in neutral between gears-CO NOT release clutch...lowers wear on syncros.
Shift when the speeds are about the same
Release clutch and re-accelerate

Next time you're next to a large dump truck or other big truck, roll your window down and listen to the driver (lots of them do this)
He'll rev the engine between gears.
You can actually shift the trans without the clutch if you want to.
For a regular passenger car, don't bother, unless you're just trying to learn now. It's unnecessary.

wow, let me get this straight...

You're suppose to be stepping on the clutch(effectively putting it in neutral) and gas at the same time ?

I been doing this when downshifting (usually on a turn from 3rd gear to 2nd gear) :
shift to neutral,
gas,
quickly step on clutch again, and shift to 2nd,
release clutch smoothly...

I have never driven a stick, but wouldnt it be more sensible (when coming to a complete stop) to not downshift until you are at a complete stop? Or am I just really oblivious to how to drive a stick...

Downshifting is necessary if you are slowing down a decent deal, but not coming to a complete stop (i.e. you're putting along at 60, then all of a sudden have to drop down to 30...can't very well stay in 4th or 5th gear at that speed).

Downshifting can also be used for engine braking, but double clutching takes away from the effectiveness a bit...though it is nicer on your transmission that way

I'll match revs if I'm downshifting with the intention of increasing speed again soon, such as when nearing a hill, or getting stuck behind another driver that is turning; if I'm engine braking, then I don't bother getting close to the gas pedal. Yay.

Dyqith, you are doing everything right.

Pacfanweb, you are describing rev matching, not double clutching. I hate to have to call someone wrong, but you are wrong. How do you suppose the term double clutching came to be? It certainly wasn?t by only clutching once. You can rev match to your heart?s desire and heel and toe to all you want, but the synchros will be used to the max if the clutch is still disengaged.

Here?s the procedure for a double clutch downshift, say from 5th to 2nd:
[*]Gas off, clutch in
[*]Shift to neutral
[*]Clutch out
[*]Match the revs, ie, blip the throttle
[*]Clutch in, shift to second
[*]Release the clutch a second time
[*]Gas it and go!

If you matched the revs correctly, that shifter will slide in to 2nd like a knife in warm butter and you can pop the clutch the second time and it will be perfectly smooth. If you keep the clutch in while matching the revs, the shift won?t feel like butter, because you are forcing the synchro to spin up the transmission?s input shaft. You?ll still be able to pop that clutch out and be smooth, but it doesn?t save any wear on the synchro.

When I was taught to drive a stick, I was always told to be in a gear incase I had to suddenly swerve and speed up or whatever to avoid danger. You can't very well do this if you are in 4th gear with the clutch in, (or nuetral) and slowed down to 20 mph. But if you have downshifted to second gear at 20 miles per hour and you suddenly have to speed up to avoid an accident (for whatever reason), well you get the idea.

Those links aren't the most "expertly" composed pieces, but they are fundamentally correct.

The tricky part to doing this is to match the engine rpm rev to as close to the speed it will run at the lower gear speed.

I have been driving a stick for 8-9 years and as far as what those links said, it just comes naturally after driving for a while. I didn't know what double clutching was when I entered this thread, but come to find out, I have been doing it all along when I exit the freeway.
I always put my car in neutral prior to slowing down and the only time I have my foot even on the clutch is when I am actively moving the shifter.
Also, I just pop the car out of gear sometimes without even using the clutch. Is that bad?

It?s not good, but you can do much worse things to a car, like putting the car into gear without using the clutch. Yeah, yeah, I know if you match the revs perfectly, the clutch is not necessary, but who can do it perfectly every time? If you want your transmission to last as long as the rest of the car, then always use the clutch.
