I'm finishing up Halo: Contact Harvest and will soon need a new book. Of the Halo books this is the least interesting one. So you might want to skip it if you're not a big Halo fan.

I like Dean Koontz, i've read about half of his books and I highly recomend The Watchers, Midnight, and Mr Murder. I like how he pitts average joes in extraordinary circumstances.

Let us know if you recommend the book or to avoid it!

Just finished the Night's Dawn series. I recommend if you are a sci-fi fan; but then if you are a sci-fi fan, the chances are good you've read it anyway. Next one on my list is "Spin". This is on the fiction side anyway.

Will probably finish it in the next two days or so.

That's a fun book, especially if you're already a cynic.

I just finished "The Gunslinger" based on some recommendations. Weird! Now I have to check out the next one in the series at the library.

I like it thus far. I'm only about a fifth of the way done with it because I had 30 mins to kill while my car was in the shop, but I look forward to continuing tomorrow once I unpack.

Best series I've ever read. And I've read a lot.

I've read just about every Dean Koontz book and over the holidays read three of his newest ones.
The third Odd Thomas book titled Brother Odd was underwhelming, but I was never a fan of the Odd series anyway. If you like the OT series, it's a must read, if not, it's skippable.
The Husband was an OK thriller with some great twists, but lacked the supernatural elements that I enjoy in the books. I give it a B grade.
The Darkest Evening Of The Year (his latest book, in hardcover only) was better than the previous two I mentioned, but still wasn't on par with his older books. It has some good characters , but the whole dog loving angle was WAY too strong. (I think his own dog had just passed away, adding fuel to the SAVE THE DOGS / DOGS ARE PEOPLE TOO! fire)
I'd give this one a B too.
My favorites are Mr. Murder, Phantoms, From The Corner Of His Eye, and Watchers.

Just finished Pullman's His Dark Materials series (Golden Compass books). I thought they were pretty good and definitely dark. I've been trying to branch into fantasy lately so before those I read Jane Lindskold's Through Wolf's Eyes series, well still have the last book to go. I enjoyed them but I'm not sure they are for everybody, I'm a sucker for wolves. The last books I read that made me think "holy shit those were good" were George R R Martin's Sword of Ice and Fire series. If you haven't read those yet do so. He needs to get off his fat ass and finish the series before he kills over.

I just finished Day by Day Armageddon by J. L. Bourne

Great book, and a must read if you're a zombie fan.

Just started The Golden Compass last night myself, which I not so patiently wait for GRRM to finish Dance.

Whats the Matter with California?
http://www.amazon.com/Whats-Ma...-Rumbles/dp/1416531025

Despite what you may think from the title, its NOT a total bash book.
But, it is written by a republican conservative leaning a little towards the christian-fundamentalist/Nazi side of the fence.
Everything he writes in the book should be taken with a 10-pound salt-lick. However, when I read something in which I have many disagreements and some agreements, it usually means the book is making me think, which is exactly what this one does.

Whether you are hardcore conservative or liberal, or even if you dont give a rats butt about how society thinks and feels, you should probably take a look at this one.
It might make you feel inspired, angry, or just plain disgusted, but it will excercise the grey matter a bit. For a right-wing nutjob, the author is able to be fairly objective most of the time.
I am about 2/3 finished.

Incidentally, I HATE nonfiction, especially political writings, but being stationed in CA for 3 years made an impression on me.
I was unable to ignore this when I saw it at Barnes & Noble last week.

Currently reading The Collected Jorkens Vol.3 by Lord Dunsany

The author wrote these within the first half of the 20th century and they are short stories about a man in a club in London who tells tales of his adventures and experiences. The man tells them as truth but they are more like tall tails, but no one can either prove or deny they are real.

This is a 3 book, the 1st book going for around $100 because of the rarity. The other 2 books are going for about $25-30.

Dunsany is a genius writer and I would highly recommend all of his books.

Storm of the Century....meh. I would like it better if it were written as a book, not a screenplay

Right now I'm reading Twenty Decisive Battles of the World. A little dry, but lots of great information. Written from a different viewpoint than I usually get.

The last book I finished was Ender's Shadow. Very good book on its own, and very interesting literary exercise. Inspired my first bit of fanfiction (about half a page). Before that was Heart of Darkness- kept waiting for the point. Before that was The Road to Samarcand by Patrick O'Brian (who wrote the Master and Commander series). Great adventure novel!

On deck: The Last of the Mohicans (love the movie), Xenocide (another Ender novel- I'm prepared to be disappointed), Rimrunners (my first try at C.J. Cherryh).

I read Candide about 12 years ago, and I have a copy...I'll run through it again sometime. I barely remember it.

If you like Dean Koontz, you might like The Running Man by Richard Bachman. Almost completely unlike the Schwarzenegger movie. You might also like Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson (I didn't) or Neuromancer by William Gibson (I did). For a change of era while keeping some of what you like about Koontz, maybe The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux.

Black Hawk Down

Read it once or twice in junior high or high school and really liked it and the movie is excellent, so while at the airport a little back, I had to pick it up. It's very very good.
