I jusr finished building a system. I was at a computer store (Fry's) getting software and noticed that the Intel Q6600's are being sold at $189!! The sale ends at the store closing 4/1/08. Should I jump on this? I've never seen a quad core that cheap before.

It was $179.99 + shipping for a few hours last week at Frys.com. With the scheduled mid April cuts, I think you're going to see some pretty good sales. All in my opinion of course!

Thanks, I should shop more often just to keep up with sales, changes, and deals. By the way, what would be a good mobo for the Q6600? Just in case I get one.

that depends on if you want a budget board or a "good" board. for budgets I would normally recommend the p35 ds3L, but right now it's about $30 more than the ip35-e at newegg (96 no reb vs 97 with $30 mir). that is such a huge premium at that price point that it's hard to recommend anything but the ip35-e. midrange you can get a p35 ds3r for about $120 or an ip35 pro for $135 AR at the egg. On the high end I'll defer to somebody who actually buys mobos in that price range...

If you are going high end, I'd recommend the Gigabyte ex38-ds4. It was the cheapest x38 board at newegg a couple weeks ago when I purchased my e3110. The performance and overclocking doesn't really improve over the p35, but I like some of the extra features.

I actually really like that ASRock 650i board w/ SLI. NV just seems to have a bunch of really interesting SLI options right now. I can think of 5 cards that I would be interested in SLIing at some point.

I'm quite curious about how two 8800GS cards would perform. I have a feeling they would hold a candle to the new 9800GTX, for $220 instead of $350. :Q

that would be a very interesting thread over in video, though isn't the 650i at 8x/8x?

Maybe, although I don't think that's much of a limitation at all (maybe 5% in some situations).

I'm thinking that the Q6600, the 650i, and 2 8800GS's are the ultimate in value right now for gaming (or else 2 9600GTs if you can get them for $120 each).

Once again thanks for the info, I think I'm going to spend the extra bucks because I can get the CPU so cheap. I'm looking at the Abit IP-35 Pro due to the good reviews from others.

Yep, I agree... A Q6600 on the ASRock 650i board with either the 8800GS or 9600GT SLI'ed would be a real bang for the buck system. That would be the best system to keep you out of the "diminishing returns" zone. I need to replace my beloved but aging 939 X2 AGP system and I think this is what I'm going to get.

I've been very happy with my ip35 pro other than when I flashed to a beta bios...don't do that unless you end up putting a 45nm quad into it btw. I don't know how much they are elsewhere, but they were $143AR shipped at newegg yesterday.
