What's in my roof/attic?

Every now and then, I hear this scraping sound above me. I sounds like there is something dragging a dead animal around. Then, at times, you hear this scraping....like it is trying to dig something up. Sometimes, I take the broom and just bang where the sound is. At the point, you hear it scrambling away only to come back 30 seconds later. What do you think it could be? Mouse? Squirrel? Racoons?

My guess is rats. Get some of the old-school traps from Home Depot or wherever, screw them to a short bit of 2x4 (so the rat can't drag the drap off into some inaccessible corner and die) and bait with little bits of rag coated with peanut butter. Rats are complete whores for peanut butter.

I once did this because I SWORE I was woken up by a rustling noise and saw a (very blurry, I need glasses) tail disappear under my oven (studio apartment. Basically slept halfway in/out of the kitchen/living area.)

They ate all the rat poison pellets. When they stopped eating them, I stopped putting them down. But the peanut-butter in the trap? Nope. I left the trap in place for over a year before it caught something. (Which prompted me to buy another box of poison pellets.)
