If he's getting divorced he would remove all the items of value.

Just guessing.

BTW: I've heard nothing but bad things about safety deposit boxes. They get robbed all the time usually by bank employees.

I had one that I used for file backups and as a PO box so I don't have to put my real address on my domain names. They did not offer preauthorized payments though which was a pain as I had to always remember to go pay for it, it was more inconvenient than it was worth and I risk losing what's inside if I forget to pay, so I canceled it. My new bank has a deposit box service but I never looked into it. I just bring backups to work now.. when I remember lol.

You because you should have gotten a pre-nup. The lawyer will find the money like a bloodhound sniffing out a racoon.

The only thing on the record with the bank is that he has a safe deposit box, not what the contents are.

And he could easily take the contents out prior to any subpoena and hide it in a secure dead drop.

Pretty sure any lawyer worth their hourly would run credit checks and such to find any assets which would include this safe deposit box. Mine shows up as just another account at my bank.

If I rent a box at a bank where I have no accounts, I doubt that would show up on a credit check. And even if there was a concerted effort to check with multiple banks just to find out if there was a box rented there, how many places would someone bother to check?

I wonder if you rented a box at a small rural bank or credit union 50 miles away from your home and not in the same town where you have relatives, and didn't have any other accounts there, would anyone ever be able to find out? (unless you used e-billing for the box rental, and your email gets subpoenaed).

Yeah, I'm sure you could go to a small, country town bank a few counties over and flip them a couple hundred bucks cash and setup a long term rental that you "pre-paid" for and stash away. There would be very little in the way of recurring paper trails and money exchange at that point. Most of them just turn their back to what you put in there.

Keep in mind some banks do not allow you to store cash in their boxes. Also while you have to have a court order to be forced to disclose contents of your box, it's sort of honor system. They aren't going to go and physically look at it.

That said the bank can always ask to view the contents of your box and force you to remove things they do not want. In the 1930's people started hording gold when it was illegal to own it. Banks would force inspections and take any gold they found (they fortunately paid the customer the rate for gold that day).

Also there are some local laws that may outlaw stockpiling of cash, as well as some federal laws if you are avoiding taxes.

I can't imagine any bank is going to say 'oh yeah, you can totally just pay us cash up front for a safety deposit box! Nope, we don't need to know who you are!!'

Clear blatant 4th amendment violation, but what does the fed give a fuck? It's another case of being butt fucked with no reach around.

Just curious as to why you guys keep a gun in the safety deposit box.
Why not at home for the intruders ??

Boy that really sucks when the government states that it is allowed to do things that it isnt allowed to do.

Banks aren't really part of the constitution. The Federal Reserve Banks are only quasi-government.

It's a common delusion that you can run to the bank and grab that gun if you really need it.

The rub is you can't bring guns into banks.

From a government perspective, let the masses build them up then clean them out.

I wouldn't mind one. Only problem is I hate having to talk to customer service people.
