In "this" economy? LoL, if he ever has money problems at any point in the rest of his life then he's doing something wrong.

His point is why would a team even pay close to what he's looking for in this economy...its going to be a financial disaster for many sports franchises and he's not going to help that much. I have to agree and think its ridiculous that LA is still talking to him.

You think he, or anyone else making millions of dollars a year, are affected so seriously by the recession that they say to themselves, "well, I better take this job here and just be happy that I have a job. Bills are going to start getting tight around here..."

For some of these idiots, yes it is. When you make 10mil a year, have 40% out for taxes, agents, lawyers, etc... then buy your entire a family a house and car, then buy yourself 4 houses and 4 cars, money gets tight.

I think he is looking for longer term commitment. Good luck with that.

From the players point of view Scott Boras is the best agent in history. The contracts he has gotten have been ginormous. Its amazing how he can get teams to essentially bid against themselves.
He may have blown a few lately, but he still has the best track record in terms of getting players more than the market should have paid them.

Yep. A lot of professional athletes live paycheck to paycheck because they are spending like idiots and they pay for all their hangers on, family, etc. They just assume the big checks will always roll in. When they stop, they are screwed.

Worst human being, but often a highly effective agent who has finagles more for his already overpaid clients than any other agent arguably could have.

Give it a couple more years and a couple more teams he fucks over, then see how many players use his douchebag services. There are already several teams (my beloved White Sox included) that refuse to work with this idiot.

I'm praying that the Dodgers just say "you know what Boras, fuck off" and see if he can pull that money out of the other 3 imaginary teams that want Manny.

Apparently the hold-up was that the money was deferred over five years - $10M + $10M + $10M + $10M + $5M

Boras is saying he countered with $25M + $20M

IMO the Dodgers will accept that, they wouldn't look very good if they are finagling over the structure to defer payment in such a manner. (Supposedly this would in effect reduce the value of the contract by $3M since the deferrals do not gain interest.)

EDIT: Also, since Boras' counter-offer has the appearance of exactly what the Dodgers had claimed publicly to offer I can't imagine it not being accepted.

They need leverage in case Manny pulls the same shit he did with Boston & Indians.

I don't understand the Giants in this case. Quit being such cheapasses!!! You have a newish park, it's always full, your ticket prices are way too high....we know you have money. Quit trying to make all this money off your team and spend some.. At least show the fans you care. I mean Rowand is a real HR threat and all (not) but you could use a hitter like Manny. Give him a 2 year deal similar to the Dodgers, then add an optional 3rd year for like $15 mil.

Swoop in and steal Manny from the Dodgers.

1. You become the immediate favorite in the weak NL West
2. You get people excited about your team and to come watch Manny and the pitching
3. You drive a stake through the hearts of Dodgers fans everywhere by taking hte only thing they had to look forward to for the year

However I'm not a Giants fan so I hope they don't do it

I <3 Manny

Left field sorely misses his dreads.

Edit: I'm pretty sure he went to LA for the headies, Boston sucks in that regard.

Maybe no relevance to the Red Sox, but his last year's "playing" or more accurately put, 'Non-playing-mailing-it-in" history in Boston is probably the major obstacle to his not being sought out by other clubs. Who wants to take the chance on a player that in mid-year of the second year of a multi-year contract just decides he doesn't like it there any longer and essentially quits playing....like Manny did in Boston?

Answer....seems to be no one. Boras has stated there are several "mystery" clubs interested in Manny, but strangely, none has surfaced with a counteroffer for Manny's services....other than the repeated offers from the Dodgers.

Absolutely. He cost himself a huge contract by quitting on the team while it was in a pennant race.

Manny didn't 'do' anything to the Indians - his contract was up, he left for much more money in Boston - period. He didn't pout, like he did last year in Boston, he played out his contract and left.

He'll end up in LA in another week or three.
