I'm not positive, but I believe the risk for birth defects begins increasing in potential mothers once they enter their 30's. So I would say that the ideal age falls between 25 and 28.

After 30 for women, things can get risky for the baby.

IIRC, the "cutoff" is closer to 35 for women. The risk for miscarriage, chromosomal abnormalities, and miscarriage due to chromosomal abnormalities increases drastically somewhere between 30-35. (I think it's generally closer to the 35 end though). IVF can increase the age of possible pregnancy to about 40, but it doesn't do anything about chromosomal issues- just conception. If you think about it, women don't make new eggs, they just cycle through them one by one. The older they are, the older the eggs are, the more time her DNA has had to degrade. On the other hand, men continue to make sperm until they day they die.

Pregnancies are automatically called "high risk" once she turns 36. She will then be subjected to an additional battery of tests.

Yeah, physically speaking for women its more like 18-25 would be ideal. There are actually studies that show kids born to older mothers have increased risk of MANY defects and also have generally lower IQs. By the time you are past 35 you are really getting into the danger zone of having problems. I know for example downs syndrome is almost exponentially dependant on age.

TBH in terms of producing health and children and a financially sound home we would probably be better off doing what the used to mack in the day marrying off 16 year old girls to 40 year old guys. That way the mother is at the peak of her physical ability to bear kids, and the father is at the peak of his financial ability to tack care of them. The way it is now in developed countries you either have kids before you can properly afford them, or else you have them too late when health complications set in. For example I know many women who tihnk they can work till they are 30 and then start thinking about having kids. Thats great from a finanical point of view, but from a health point of view you are putting yourself and your child at MUCH greater risk waiting that long to have kids.

Personally given todays practice of marrying someone your own age I would try to have kids between 25-30 years old, but not before you are financially able to afford them.

I would think more about how the kid(s) would deal with having a father and mother who could possible lack the energy and vitality to be active in their parenting of the children. By the time your kid is 10, you'll be 58; almost old enough to be his grandfather. Do you want that?

If you do, be sure that your erection doesn't last longer than four hours.

Older parents can be very cool. First they have the wisdom that most young parents do not have, second they have lived their life and they are at that point where they want to spend more time at home, instead of out partying or seeing the world. So that means they are going to have a greater interest in what their child does. Most of them are financially stable which means they can afford to take a few days off or watch their sons baseball game.

The tradeoffs are there for whatever age you raise children at.

For women, for health reasons, the younger the better. For men, I would take in account maturity and financial health so lets say 35 - 40 years old.

My mom was 40 when she had me - my dad was 38. I'm a perfectly healthy, well-adjusted adult. My dad is just about ready to retire, and I am just about ready to move out.

Personally, I think having kids later in life was good for them - it kept them young and active. Dad never had an issue playing sports with me or anything, even if he was in his 50s - it's not like you are a cripple by then.

If you think having kids is a burden, regardless of your age, you probably shouldn't be having kids in the first place.

How are you going to afford to send them to college if you are going to retire on their freshman's year.

I could imagine chasing a two year old around at the age of 50. I'm 25 and its hard enough.

Late teens to early 30s for women, anytime for men, but I like the poster who said 9 months after you die.

I have a former colleague who was 42 when she had her first. Her husband was in her mid fifties. They had a healthy, normal baby, so it is possible...but it's pushing it I would say.

It is a shame that this world emphasizes career over family, and by the time most women discover what they're missing, it's too late

Men have the similar issues, quality of the sperm deteriorates as they get older, increasing the chance for birth defects. The age of the man and the woman contribute to the probability of birth defects, not just the woman.

For a man, I think early 30s. This way you've had plenty of time to do whatever you want while you are still young. . They'll be out of the house in your early 50s.

Both of our children were born when I was 31 (5 yrs ago) and that's cool (it is now, it wasnt then). And nope, they're not twins and yes they are from the same mother.

doesn't matter for the man as long as he's financially comfortable. getting old? marry young...
for a woman, after 30 the fertility starts diving off a cliff.

I'll be 24 in January and I honestly would like to have a kid a few years down the road. My last GF's 3 year old son really grew on me and I've always been a big kid . The first step is finding a wife though lol.
