What's that sound?

Hey everyone,

Got a 2014 Nissan Murano with a horrible grinding sound. It's not a clicking or squeaking. It sounds like my muffler is dragging on the ground. It only seems to happen when I make sharp right turns and it's coming from the front driver side area. Any ideas?

I've checked and there's nothing dragging on the ground.

Any ideas?

A worn wheel bearing. or a damaged CV Joint.

I once had a friend who introduced me into a group of redneck mechanics in Virginia. John -- the former -- and Tommy, a semi-literate mechanic who looked like Greg Allman -- were driving around in the burbs after a big snowstorm. Tommy, who had a sort of sixth sense about cars, parts and other matters, saw a Honda Accord parked at the curb. They had in mind to offer the owner money for it.

They went up to the house, occupied by a Korean-American family, and were informed there was something wrong with the car. Tommy asked some more questions. The two adjourned to the curb, where Tommy remarked that he thought the CV joint on the driver side was not secure in its socket. So they went back to the house, offered the owners $500, got the key, title and other essentials. Tommy got down in the snow and jostled with the CV joint.

Then, they drove off in the Accord. And they sold it for $2,500 to a nice couple in Maryland. Extra ducats!

. . . . and always keep track of your "extended lube" work with the repair shop. One needs to occasionally have the wheel-bearings repacked with grease . . .

its going to be the sound of your tire falling off if you dont fix it you cant see its loose?

2014 Murano has non-serviceable (greased for life) wheel bearings, built into the hubs, even on the rear wheels on the FWD models. I don't know if any of those can have the bearings pressed out but it is not usually done and I'm not seeing a part # for separate bearings either. Usually the whole hub is replaced when the bearings are shot.

However, that video does not sound like a wheel bearing. It doesn't sound like a CV axle either. What it sounds MOST like (besides your exhaust dragging the ground ) is a bent brake shield rubbing.

Either way, time to jack up that corner, pull the tire, poke, pull, wiggle, pry, inspect, etc. If the wheel hub or CV axle is THAT bad, it will be very very obvious at that point. I would even find it hard to believe the CV axle didn't shred itself in two before it could make a sound like that. Check the strut mount and spring seat while you're at it as they could cause the wheel to go out of its normal range of motion.

I suppose another possibility is your wheel well liner or another nearby mounted component has come loose and hits the tire when making turns, or possibly you have a broken exhaust mount or hanger and it's swaying sideways to hit something during turns, which would tend to happen more the faster you make the turn, not so much going very slowly.
