Trying to decide if I should upgrade to 1 Gbps connection right now just on 50 Mbps but don't see any use for faster. Maybe I am wrong though.

You seriously need to ask what the advantage is? Really?
Clearly more is better. I think even if you ask a bunch of elementary school children that question, they would say is more better.

The real question is, is more bandwidth worth the additional cost, and if so in which situations?

You can do an awful lot with low bandwidth. Streaming videos or multiple simultaneous Pandora streams work just fine for me at 3/1 (Time Warner's now discontinued $14.99/month plan). I personally don't think even upgrading to 50 would be noticeable for me. Yet fiber internet is being installed in my neighborhood this month.

Basically, it's to much bandwidth to use, and is neither attractive nor desirable. But some people want it anyway.

To scale:

DSL: 8=D
LTE: 8==D
Cable: 8====D
Gigabit: 8====================================================================================================D

But seriously. It's just more bandwidth. HD streams really do push even cable connections, worse if you do multiple, and if you work out of a home office, you value as much bandwidth as you can get for RDP sessions, videoconferencing, etc. There's a perception that cable and DSL might also be less reliable.

Technologically speaking, unlike DSL or Cable, which have limitations built into the wire, once you run fiber, there's not really a speed limit. Gigabit is a nice round number that markets well.

On the flip side, my wifes (at the time girlfriend) place had 3/1 internet, and I couldn't stand it. Streaming netflix barely worked (and looked terrible), and forget about me doing work from home at her place (my work involves transferring many files both directions). We have 100/100 now, and its great. That said, even for me, going from 100/100 to 1000/1000 is pretty solid diminishing returns.

You've failed to provide any context as well -- what do you do on your home network? Just streaming? Host your own website that gets a ton of traffic (doubtful)? Filthy pirate? Pr0n?

The real advantage comes if the ISP allows you to run servers and offers static IPs, but it seems most ISPs don't. So the only other advantage is that "more is better" but in reality there is a point of diminishing returns as not all source/destinations will even be able to handle it. Once you get to a certain speed the real factor to consider is whether or not it has a cap. A gig connection with a cap would be kind of pointless.

Personally, I'm happy with my 50/30 uncapped connection. I find even for massive downloads/uploads it does just fine.

My ISP does allow game servers so I do host a MMO game server off it. Local CPU/disk resources is always going to be cheaper than online as you have to pay per month vs 1 time, so the more stuff I can host at home and offload from my online server, the better.

I think it's funny that some people think there couldn't possibly be a reason some people may make use of a gigabit connection for legit/legal reasons. In many markets, there's often little or no choices between 50/15 and Gigabit. Is 50/15 enough for the average user? Sure. But if you're in a home with multiple gamers/streamers or if you do online backups, you can kill that upload speed in a hurry.

NNTP? I know what it is but I didn't know people still used it with the advent of PronHub and the like.

Posts to torrents are posted on usenet simultaneously. But torrents ( web based, like Pirate Bay,) get jammed up by ISPs and p2p can be slow anyway. Usenet offers an exclusive, separate pipe, so the d/l of files is at full bandwidth. Admittedly it costs a monthly subscription.

Usenet is not competition for streaming porn but what it does best tho is everything else, like movies, TV series, sports events, basically everything on TV and in theaters of any significance. See e.g., https://nzbplanet.net/movies
https://www.gingadaddy.com/nzbbrowse.php and https://www.oznzb.com/movies.

At ~ $10.00 pm, for nntp and leaching software subscriptions, it is cheap.

(Of course all this is contrary to copyright so excuse me for tempting you with illegally obtained material.If you have ethical concerns, please ignore my ramblings.)
