I own an ipod, however I haven't tried any of the competing products. I have yet to see anything as well designed as the ipod...honestly nothing looks like it even comes close. The whole interface is incredible. It's honestly my favourite tech purchase ever...and that's saying alot!

I think it looks much uglier than the IPOD but its cheaper.

It looks substantially larger than the ipod. It is also missing the scroll-whell, chrome finish, sexy design, and itunes. I suppose I'm biased and I haven't even seen this mysterious "ipod killer", but it doesn't appear to be much of a threat, unless price is a serious concern. I got my ipod through apple with a student discount...$379CDN for the 10GB, which is more than enough room to store all of my favourite music.

"Summary: Although I still rank iPod No. 1, the Dell DJ, along with the hot Rio Karma, certainly belongs in the top echelon of portable hard-drive MP3 players."

What top echelon, ipod is in there with no comparison in sight regarding interface and navigation (which with 1000+ mp3's it quickly becomes probably the most important thing imho)

I'd rather have a cheaper unit that plays for 20+ hours (Dell) than an overpiced one that .. has a calendar?
I realize that ipod has some great features but if you don't need anything special what's wrong with the Dell?

Nothing is wrong with it. It's just not what SickBeast asked for - "the best". The Dell MP3 player is just like their machines. Perfectly mediocore for a better than average price. Nothing "best" about good enough for most at a price low enough for most.

Ok so the IPOD looks best. But it costs more. For the price it looks like the Dell is better.. Anyone company could make a god-like mp3 player but if it costs $900 who is going to buy it? Price is important when considering best.

i cant justify paying $100 more for an iPod and getting 5 less gb than the dell player, regardless of looks

btw, the dell is only sligtly biggger but has MUCH better battery life (16 hours)

I voted for the iPod. However, money is definitely the biggest consideration when buying anything. If you don't have enough money to buy a product, then it simply cannot be done. The Dell MP3 player looks quite nice. It boasts longer battery life (15 hours vs 10 hours) than the iPod, and it holds more music for an equivalent price. However, the interface is better on the iPod according to reviews. If you can afford it, get the iPod. If you want to save some cash, then get the Dell player.

Look at the specs on all of them, the Nomad has the best sound quality. Apple doesn't even tell you what the signal-to-noise ratio is on the iPod.

I read a review of the ipod on an audiophile website and they analyzed it's components. They were actually quite impressed with the quality of the sound output. Just because apple won't release the SNR you shouldn't automatically assume that it's terrible. I find the sound quality phenominal on the ipod. My only complaint is that the EQ is terrible, which is really a moot point for me since I'm using Bose Triport headphones. It's actually reccomended to disable all bass-boost/eqs.
