I've had it, but I can't remember a thing about it. I may even have a bottle. I suppose I should go look. I was thinking earlier a glass of whisky would be nice.

I'll try to get a sample of some of the smoother stuff recommended here, but if I cant find anything I like then its back to vodka for me. Belvedere or bust.

Jw sucks. Seriously, 200 bucks for a blend? Glenlivet is better and cheaper than jw blue.

The Glenlivet what? Definitely not the 12. I guess the case can be made for the French Oak Reserve 15 if you really like simplicity and apple flavors, or the Cask Strength (if you can still find it). The 18? You're encroaching on Highland Park 18 territory in terms of price.

Are you talking independant Glenlivet bottlings, like Murray McDavid, Cask, or Gordon & MacPhail? I'll give you those, they do a pretty good job.

Blends have an unfair stigma. it takes skill, and quality ingredients to make a good blend. What you lose in variable character, you make up in consistency. Variable character is double edged sword. While you sometimes get gems, you also sometimes get mediocrity. It's a trade off, but the point is blends shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

had the johnny walker sampler set at mastros to compliment their butter cake.

It was great, but you definitely get diminishing returns after gold. I wouldn't ever buy blue with my own money.

sigh... Just poured the last of my Black Bush. I guess I'll have to try my 12 yr Tullamore Dew. I haven't had that in years, but I'm sure it's pretty awesome. I'm a big fan of their regular bottling. It's my favorite budget Irish. Blows Jameson out of the water. It's a mystery to me that Jameson is as popular as it is. It tastes like alcohol. No flavor, and no character. Even their higher end bottlings are only drinkable. There's nothing exceptional about them.

Just went over to the hooch store.
Never noticed until now they have a nice selection of mini bottles. Johnny Walker Red and Black were there, along with Gentlemen Jack and the slow aged Jack. They had a bottle of Blue behind the glass, 220 dollars.
Guy behind the register said dont bother, it tastes almost exactly the same as the black.
No double black in the store. And the Gold & green were only available in medium bottles, not small ones. Was looking at 80 dollars or more.

Ok, the Gentleman Jack was pretty good.
Not fantastic, but it definitely went down easier than anything else I've had so far.

Had the Single barrel select. It was only slightly better than the original, and not nearly as smooth as the Gentleman.

Took in the Glenlivet 12 year old single malt.
It was almost exactly like the Single Barrel jack, too rough. Did not go down easy.

Are you doing shots of these, or sipping them? Shots really don't do good whisky justice.

I'm sipping the little bottles. 50 ml and its taking me 5 or so slurps, so probably 10ml at a time.

Try pouring them in a glass. It won't make a new whisky out of them, but it'll allow them to breathe, and it adds to the experience. Any glass will work, but something like a brandy snifter is almost ideal. Breathing through your nose while drinking reveals more subtleties of the spirit.

If you want a good bang for your buck scotch, get some Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or.

Ya that's a good choice. The Quinta Ruban is a bit cheaper and some people like it better, and the Astor is a bit more and probably the best out of all of them. They're all pretty good values though.

If harsh is not your thing stay away from scotch. Bourbon is smoother. You'd probably enjoy Jim Beam or Jack Daniels.
