I have a wealthy friend in Kenya. He wants me to get him a high end laptop.

I've heard IBM Thinkpads and Sony Vaios are good. Any other opinions?

If your friend is not a gamer or an enthusiast, and his questioning of you suggests to me that he isn't, I would get a 17" powerbook. They are powerful, have a beautiful screen, has good battery life, and weigh only 7 pounds. That voodoo weighs close to 9 pounds and probably has terrible battery life.

? 1.33GHz PowerPC G4
1440x900 resolution
? 1GB DDR333 SDRAM - 1 SO-DIMM
? 80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 5400rpm
? SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
? AirPort Extreme Card
? Professional 17 Backpack Case by Brenthaven
? Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
? APP for PowerBook (w/ or w/o display) - Enrollment Kit
? 17-inch TFT Display
ATI Mobility Radeon9600 (64MB DDR)
Gigabit Ethernet
FireWire 400 & 800
DVI & S-Video out

Subtotal $4,173.00

I agree with the voodoo.

If money and mobility isn't an issue, then the M:780 with a 256mb 9700 and 3.4ghz P4EE should be able to handle your gaming AND work like childsplay.
Hell its even got raid and a dual format DVD burner. NUTS

Thanks for the advice, but this guy is 50 yrs old - he's not a gamer. And he wants something lightweight. He's replacing a Dell (about 3 yrs old) that's too heavy for him (probably only weighs about 7 lbs).

How about this?

It's under 4 pounds but it has a 14" screen, a combo drive, and a powerful processor with lots of ram.

If he's 50...i'd look at something with a larger screen, well, depending on how good his eyesight is. IBM T4x would be my choice for him.

powerbook 15 inch/ 1.25 ghz/ 1 GB of ram/ superdrive/ 80 gb HDD

$1999 + 100 more for another 512 of ram = $2100

ignoring the fact that we have no idea what he is going to do with it(besides pose), I'd go with a fully decked-out powerbook.

Ignoring price(which you are in this case), it is hard to pick anything besides a powerbook, unless you're a gamer, imho.

hehehe, if I weren't a gamer, all I'd have is macs, which is kind of sad, considering how anti-apple I've historically been.

I didn't either, and you didn't read my post either or else you would see that I beat that overkill with the config I made him

funny that they listed the battery as optional 'cause with that kinda power you'd probably have to keep the dang thing plugged in all the time

i perfer the 15 for better battery life, not as heavy

i find the 17 just to big, esp for the tiny tables we have in the lecture halls
