I don't think there is a significant difference between PS/2 and USB keyboards/mice.

I have a generic Mitsumi keyboard (which I think has a better feel than Logitech or Keytronics) and an MS Intellimouse Explorer. I would recommend both of these, and also the Intellimouse Optical.

For a mouse, I personally use the IntelliMouse Explorer (I have the "old" version; it's never given me problems). As for the keyboard, Microsoft Internet Keyboard. I pretty much decided months ago that I'd stop buying expensive keyboards because something usually ends up happening to them anyway (like spilled sodas, beer, etc.). This is one of the things I have to deal with living with my brothers......

Both are connected PS/2. I never really thought USB made much of a difference for what I generally do.

Another vote for the Boomslang. I like the feel of Keytronic keyboards myself.

Keyboard: Focus FK-201. The "tactile click" has po'd more than a few people but i love it for gaming. Otherwise the Microsoft Elite is pretty good.
Mouse: Logitech Mouseman Optical. The regular was great and so is this one.

USB mice are generally better because of the higher scan rate (125Hz). Even though you can use a program like PS2Rate to up your ps/2 rate to 200Hz, it creates a slightly greater load on the CPU.

I just got the MS internet keyboard and it's great! I also ordered the Intellimouse optical, but switched it with my wife's trackball due to office space.

for the mouse: MS Intellimouse Explorer - more buttons and customizable, and no cleaning the stupid wheels!
for the KB: MS IntelliType Pro

Definitely get a USB mouse, it's movement is much smoother. I also noticed the smoothness in FPS games. I personally use the Logitech USB Wheelmouse. I like the Microsoft mice more for just desktop work, but I find Microsoft mice stink in gaming. So I chose the Logitech.

As far as keyboards go, I really like my IBM 'Stealth' keyboard, it's compact yet sturdy, and the keys have an excellent feel to them, Ps/2 connections are fine for keyboards.

I love the MS Natural Pro (not elite). But, I like ergo better, doesn't squish my wrists together, and the Pro has the USB hub built in for my Explorer. MS seems to make my favorite peripherals lately.

I use an MS Natural Elite, but I've been eyeing that Pro that has that all too sweet two port hub on it. For my mousing needs, my USB Logitech MouseMan Wheel (The one with the thumb button) does great. Definitely go USB. I've read that the new optical mice are pretty nifty too.

For a while, I loved my Intellimouse Explorer Intellieye... but recently, it's been acting up. But I will still recommend it. Just don't treat it like Sh*t. Keyboard... whatever works... and is quiet!

I would agree with aUt0eXebat as well.

And with yos... dropping these optical mice are EXTREMELY bad... with my old ballmouse, i'd drop them dozens of times and they still worked perfectly... drop these a couple of times and you're bound to break it.

Boomslang 2000 all the way!!! I have a logitech internet kybd, and it works.... I dont really look to spend a whole lot on a keyboard, just one I can type on... heh. I'll save the extra cash for my mouse!

Boomslang: WWWWAAAAYYYY too expensive... i doubt it would be worth that much more over the $35 i forked over for the logitch mouseman optical.. which IMO fits better to me (another big thing is personal preference.. take a run to best buy and feel em out for yourself).

Keyboard, i like my MS natual pro... but it's getting cruddy on me.. about a year and some usage now... the USB hub sucks on it tho.. it drops out on me all the time.. so i never use it.

I want a logitech ergo.... but all they make is cordless for that, and well, cordless doesn't work too well for FPS games i've found, and well, it's $100 (altho, w/ a cordless mouse). In theory, i would use a corded and cordless... but the problem being can't find the logitech alone.

As far as Keyboards are concerned I would stick with any of the good old Cherry stuff, cheap, nice touch and structural stability. If you like to pay a little more I heard the Logitech Wireless Keyboard works nice, especially if u use Winamp a lot, because it has those handy play control buttons. Being wireless also makes it very easy to set up at a place other than your desk.
The optical mice come in handy when u a) dont have a hard surface to use it one, for example your bed (I like to surf
will lying in bed...)and b) when u have to clean them, because u dont....
Wireless mice are nice gadgets for sure, but as for all wireless things they rely on batteries and they do run out of juice. And without the JUICE there is no fun in life...

btw: u can get the smooth mouse movement with ps2 mice too, use ps2rate!

I recommend Microsoft IntelliMouse - regular or explorer. I've been using this mouse ever since it has been released to public. I love this mouse. I've never dropped my mouse in my life so I've never known if this mouse is durable or not due to impact, but I treated my mouse like a king

For Keyboard - I just tested INTEL wireless keyboard -$79.99 in Microcenter. I know this is little bit pricy but it feels just like old Keytronics keyboard. I would recommand Keytronics keyboard unless you like Microsoft splited keyboards - which I don't like - but no retail computer store around me sells Keytronics brand anymore. odd.. INTEL keyboard touch keys feels right to me.
