The key is that Canon's BCI-3 and 6 series "think tanks" are clear. You can simply look at them and see how much ink you have left. They also are read from the underside via a mirror and will notify you when they are out. There is no internal chip or the need for a chipsetter device to reuse the cartridge.
Not sure if that answered that question, but thanks for the info.

Mind you, not all Epson cartridges have chips but I undersatand the newer ones do.
If you buy a generic they simply recycle the cartridge and reset the chip. For you to refill it it have to use a resetter device.
As I said, I didn't have to. These were older Stylus 740 carts though.

Thanks for all the great info guys. I'm gonna check out i960 at my local Sams to see if I like it. I wonder if they have demo print outs there.

I have been extremely impressed with my i950 - and the i960 is supposedly even better. People walk into my cubical at work and see all of the photos that I have up and always ask if they are digital or not. They look pretty much perfect. Canon's newer printers are not quite as fade resistant as either HP or Epson's latest offerings, but if you cover the image with plastic or glass you can avoid that problem. Alternatively, I'd recommend experimenting with papers.

I've had some problems with 3rd party ink clogging on my Canon i950. I tried two different companies and both resulted in problems with clogging and with the ink detecting mechanism not working correctly. Now I just stick with Canon ink.

For paper I like the Red River Polar gloss paper for best bang per dollar.

I couldn't find the i960 at my local sams. They had the i950 for $150. I bought it because it seems almost exactly the same as the i960 minus the 4x6 photo paper loader and it's not USB 2.0. If there is a bigger difference than these two things, then let me know and I'll take it back before I take it out of the box.

Thanks for all the ink tips. I think I'll buy a refill kit and see how they work. Then I'll order a few 55 gallon barrels of ink.

The i860 ($150) has the 4x6 loader, but doesn't have the 6 tanks. Guess it does just because it's a new model.

Well about the Epson printers refusing to print with ink still in the cart - here's what I was doing on my old Stylus 540 - I would take the cartridge out and put it in as if I'm putting a new cartridge, then it would print at least as much as before saying it ran out.

Also - one thing that I never really understood - what is the difference between a normal ink-jet printer and a photo printer? Is it the colors? Regulars have 4 and photo have 6?
