I don't like carputers because I really don't want to wait for it to boot up. I have a doube din opening in my dash but would like to keep my single din stereo. I suppose my options are:

Non permanent navigation system like the magellan roadmate 500:

"permanent" (installed into dash) like the new pioneer system.. it's $2k though

carputer anyway.. with a 7inch lcd mounted somewhere.... and a pc under a seat.

I already have a handheld gps capable of connecting with gps software...

I guess there are no better alternatives.... does a "gps module" exist? Like something I can hook up to a touchscreen...

I have a usb receiver that goes into my carputer. If you buy the handhelds you can just mount it somewhere. The nice part with those is that they arent bound to only one car.

HP 2215 pocket pc + socket GPS kit + 4G micro drive.
You will end up with a gps system, small pc, and an ipod mini

Get a proper power supply for a CarPC (such as the Opus Solutions) and you can have it "boot up" from Standby in about 3 seconds.

Check out my sig for more information (or PM me)

I went the PDA way for GPS after buying a standalone Garmin GPS.

PDA GPS software has ALOT of limitations. I'm not that thrilled with it and rarely use it these days.

AAA membership = free maps

or buy a Thomas Bros map for ~$10-$20 for your area.

GPS NAV in a freakin' car (where you probably drive in the same town and have the same commute every damned day) is for the mentally or gentitally challenged.
