What's the best way to attach a heatsink/fan to videocard? Not including ordering a custom heatsink/fan from tennmax or anything like that. What's the most effective way to attach a cooling device? Thermal tape? GLUE? = \

Hmm, depending on whether or not you would want to remove it, if not thermal epoxy should to the trick, thermal tape, is less efficient but lets you remove the sink.

If at all possible you ought to strap the heatsink on with cable strips, and add a bit of thermal paste.

The fan can easily be added with superglue of some sort.

This works if the slot next to your video card is free.

Take a slot cover and bend it at right angles. Get a 486 CPU fan and glue it (use super glue) to the bent slot cover. Screw it in over the slot adjacent to your video card. If you bend the slot cover properly the fan will be suspended right next to the chips on your video card.

I did this a few years ago on a Matrox Millennium card and it worked like a charm.

With my old Voodoo3 3000 AGP, I replaced the stock thermal transfer material with my own heatsink paste. Then I took a small fan (50x50x10mm) off an unused heatsink and screwed it onto the stock heatsink for some air movement. Worked pretty well, I was able to get around 10MHz more than before the modification. I think I could have gone higher but the RAM on Voodoo3 wouldn't go anymore.

I found that if you add a dab of super glue to all four corners, and fill the center with thermal grease you get the best preformance for cooling.. which of cource is the goal of adding a new heatsink.

Just take a drill, make sure you don't hit the chip, or it will be damaged. best to take 4 4mm bolts, and screw it on/up tightly. best results are when the pcb is bent a little so the cooler is making good contact. the best cooler will be the Alpha (FC-)PAL6035 with YS Tech fans. You will need to ajust the heatsink to be able to put the srews through

this will ABSOLUTELY make sure you won't overheat your GPU

depends on the card - many have a variety of mounting holes around the chip - if yours does then mark a hs using the holes you want, drill it and use small screws w/ nylon washers, and thermal paste on the chip.

I just replaced the wimpy hsf on my Hercules Prophet 2 32 MB GeForce with a K6 hsf: Hoping to increase the core/memory speeds with coolbits.

I was able to overclock to 215/370,(from 200/333) but any further & I get system freezes.

The factory hsf is connected with plastic gromlets.

I spread some radio shack thermal paist on the core, cleaned two oposing corners with windex & applied some thermal glue - holds like a charm.

I figure if I need to, I can remove the K6 hsf & put the stock unit back.

I used the superglue/thermal paste method. You'll see in the pictures I didn't bother with zip ties but with a bigger heatsink/fan I would add the ties.

I also have a second one on the back, but I don't think it does anything.

The first picture shows my RAMsinks (which I think are probably useless in my case). The second pictures shows both my big fan (pointing down) and the smaller one (pointing towards the CPU).
