What's the best way to make posters?

I need to make a 20x30 poster advertising a fund raising event for a charity.
In the past I have made them as word files, and converted them to jpgs, and sent them to costco to be printed. They come out streaky with lines across the page - it's not costco's fault, it's in the file.

I thougth I could get around this by doing the poster in ppt and saving as a jpg, but it is a JPEG File Interchange Format, and the resolution is low - too low to print a 20x30 poster.

What other way can I do this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

What's your budget? Using a large-format printer (e.g. HP DesignJet) is definitely the best way to go, but it's gonna cost...Kinko's offers that service, but I'm not sure how much they charge (we have plotter here at work). I'd imagine that printing a 20x30 poster is probably going to cost the better part of $100. Otherwise, what tfinch said, rasterbate (http://homokaasu.org/rasterbator/))

If I can get it into a jpeg, I can have a 20x30 printed at costco for $10.00 with $10. for next day air.

That's a good deal, I didn't realize Costco offered the service. Definitely better than Kinko's...

but how do I get a good quality jpeg? The resolution from ppt is only 530kb, costco recommends 2272x1500pixrls for a 20x30 poster...

I don't think you can get quality that isn't there for something like this. Ideally you'd have a vector-based graphics format.
Out of curiosity, what's the biggest size Costco will print?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you should be able to use CorelDraw or OpenOffice to create a vector based version of your image, then export it at the size you need it to be for the print.

I can download a trial version of corel draw - I'm not clear about creating a vector based version of the image. Can you recommend a good website with step by step instructions?
