What's the better tech for gaming 120hz or IPS?

Debating an ips Dell U2410 or a 120hz asus LCD. Is IPS an improvement you'd say wow while gaming or is basically for editing photos? Does 120hz bring anything to the gaming scene?

I was wondering more so about 3d versus IPS.

Ended up going with IPS though, just ordered the Dell U2410, I can let you know when it arrives what I think of it!

In what I've been reading here over the past couple of months, we seem to be breaking up into two camps here -- some who want 16x10 and better color/viewing angles, and others who put more emphasis on 120Hz's higher frame rate support (which in some cases starts another argument on its own entirely).

As far as 3D, I'd probably want to see some signs of longevity and market acceptance (e.g. it's not just a short-lived gimmick) before I buy in. And, given that I already wear glasses because I have problems focusing on things close-up, what the ergonomic issues are going to be.

let me tell you that gaming on 120hz lcd vs 60hz is nothing short of amazing. So much so that I don't use my 3007wfp in lieu of a 23 in TN 1080p. I simply can't get over how much smoother it is at 120 hz. I have the Asus vg236h that came with the 3d vision glasses. My girlfriend(soon to be fiance, she doesn't know about the ring yet ) surpised me with it for Christmas since she respects my enjoyment of technology.

I come from a long line of dell ultra sharps and know Quality panels when I see them. This TN I'm using is quite impressive and would have no problems recommending it to you.

Great minds think alike. So what did you decide? I don't notice any lag while gaming on TN so I'm kinda leaning towards IPS.

I haven't fully made up my mind yet :$, which was why I asked, to see if there was any consensus on this yet.

I was initially planning on an IPS screen upgrade -- depending on how finances work out next month, I might have a few hundred dollars after the new system build to work with, and I'd give this widescreen (an LG W2340VG, which I've been pretty happy with overall) to my wife. But now I see everyone talking about 120Hz for gaming.

And, as I brught up in the other thread -- it's frustrating because I don't have a chance to see these things in person without actually buying them. None of the stores I've been to in my area have any on display where you can compare them with your own eyes to see the difference(s).

My wife is similarly supportive -- sometimes I think she's more geeked about the new build than I am. Congrats, by the way!

What about games like Crysis or metro 2033 that don't get over 60fps? Can you still see a difference? It really is comparable to your 30" in terms of picture quality? How's 3D? And congrats on the fiancé.

Games are smoother regardless because the monitor refreshes more frequently helping mitigate microstuttering. The picture quality is very good, I hardly can tell a difference. If there were a deal breaker, I would say it would be the glossy screen. For me it is a non issue but other may not like it. 3D is amazing as well, although admittedly I prefer 2d at higher than 60hz. The difference might as well be as subtle as walking a pink elephant into the room. The mouse is smooth, dragging boxes around, scrolling text up and down on the forum. I would take all these pluses over more accurate colors(subjective anyways unless you are doing professional work).

Thanks. It's a done deal then. I'm picking up the asus. I respect your tech opinions. You seem just as geeky as me and it's a rare thing to meet someone as tech geeky as myself.

yep like other have said, if you are avid FPS gamer chose 120 Hz because it will increase you reaction, so you will see 120 FPS instead locked to 60 FPS

and btw who the hell playing MP with crysis or metro,

You only consider getting a monitor with more than 60hz if you intend to play games while achieving higher than 60 FPS. Higher refresh rate only becomes useful when your hardware actually generates new images fast enough for the monitor to actually take advantage of that fact.

If you're under 80 FPS an 120hz monitor isn't your only option. Go here to see what your options can be.

If you are playing well over 90 FPS in certain ways having a slower refresh rate monitor can hurt image quality. Stuff like this is highly technical but I've come across a great resource that explains monitor considerations in plain English. You can educate yourself here.

The person who said higher refresh smooths out microstutters is confused. Microstutters is an issue that occurs with multigpu setups. It's a problem independent of display tech and will harm you regardless of your refresh rate. If you can perceive it (not everyone does) at 60hz you'll definitely feel it even more at 120 hz because it will catch those moments where the gpus hiccup in making new frames more often.

lol, I wasn't referring to Multigpu microstuttering thank you. I was referring to "flickering" associated with a lower refresh rate. I hesitate to say flicker casue I sense that you are now gonna tell me lcd's don't flicker. Sigh...........

120 Hz makes a difference but I personally don’t think it offsets the advantages of 30” + 2560x1600 + IPS.

Guy at work keeps saying 60 hz monitors give him a headache and he can only game on his new 22" 120 hz monitor. After using IPS panel not sure I could use a TN panel at home on purpose again.
