1.) The inclusion of multiple divorces by the same people.
2.) The desire of Americans to get "what they want when they want it" leading to marriage to early in life, and before they really know the person.
3.) The desire of Americans to have "the perfect life" leading to their unwillingness to cope with even minor quarrels.
4.) The ability for women to marry for wealth. Divorce and get at least half of a man's wealth, maybe more. (Not one of my favorite reasons)

Pick your favorite.

Yup. That's definitely it. Thank G-d for legislation like the "Defense of Marriage Act".

yeah, thank g-d for the congress defending us from evil gay people who would like a high chance of getting a divorce just like everyone else! imagine all the added divorces clogging up the court system!
I love the logic behind all this; "You can't get married because it would be a threat to marriage!!"

-or-

"Honey, it's over!! I can't remain in a traditional marriage now devalued since we went to Bob and Rob's reception!"

think about how bland and boring and unstylish traditional weddings would be in the face of hip new gay marriages! "gay eye for the straight marriage" would just drive up the costs of weddings!

20/80 rule

20% of the people count for 80% of the results. One person getting divorced three times makes it negate 6 sucessful marriages. (To get 50%)

A 'trial period' is called dating our courtship. Not marriage.
Are you saying that marraige is taken seriously by everyone? I'm saying that divorce rates are so high because people don't view marraige as a lifelong committment and instead see it as a reversible 'procedure.'

Ideally, courtship and dating would be the trial periods. Unfortunately people don't take marraige seriously enough to give dating and courtship their due course.

Pardly, but that merely means that sh*ty marriages are more likely to disolve than in the past. Marriages may have been just as bad 40 years ago, but divorce was less condoned.

I may have said something else, but this is what I was thinking too.

Yup

Having God in the relationship would definitely help.

I blame people for trying to force their moralities on others.

I wish our forefathers would have put more time and effort into writing the 1st amendment and our elected politicians were not given the right to bend and twist its words to suit whatever agenda they had.

Hehe...someone's not very familiar with divorce law, are they?

ie- An uncle of mine is in the middle of an ugly divorce; not only will he likely lose "HALF", he's paying for her (very expensive) attorney to boot. Nice, huh?

Because of family values have went out the door.

Because of (waaaaaay too far to the) right-wing femenists.

Because of lack of self respect.

Because of misunderstanding, when they say "...till death do us part", they forgot to mention "of natural causes"

I think it has to do with the fact that most people in this country have no idea how to have a real relationship because they just have so many issues within themselves that they ignore.

I view it as there are no roles anymore. Just two people "marrying." Previously the roles were well defined and hence each person could work toward that role.

Men are now expected to take on many of the roles and responiblities women had. I wanna know what responsiblities woman have taken on other than "I get to have a career now and get to shift more onto my husband...wheeee!"

In fact, IMHO you're seeing the backlash of gender ambiguity. Men and women are starting to cherish their differences instead of trying to be uni-sex metrosexuals. That is a good thing. Equal does not mean the same.

And how does this relate to the high divorce rate? Are you upset because you can't marry your daughters and it's straining your marriage between you and your cousin?

Unfortunately it's one of those multi factoral answers...

With the exception of proven abuse, it should be more difficult to get a divorce. Course then the murder rate would skyrocket

The status quo is serial monogamy, not going to change soon either.

Some cool quotes:

I didn't marry you because you were perfect. I didn't even
marry you because I loved you. I married you because you
gave me a promise. That promise made up for your faults.
And the promise I gave you made up for mine. Two imperfect
people got married and it was the promise that made the marriage.
And when our children were growing up, it wasn't a house that
protected them; and it wasn't our love that protected them - it was that
promise.
Thornton Wilder, The Skin of Our Teeth

You need only do three things in this country to avoid poverty - finish high school,
marry before having a child, and marry after the age of 20. Only 8 percent of the families
who do this are poor; 79 percent of those who fail to do this are poor.
William Galston, Clinton White House

Commitment has kind eyes. He wears sturdy shoes.
Everything is vivid when he is around. It is wonderful to sit
and have lunch in his gardens around harvest time. You
can taste in the vegetables that the soil has been cared for.
J. Ruth Gendler

We have a group of very passionate, romantic couples.
They sort of enjoy the bickering and the arguing...
to them, it symbolizes real involvement and connection.
John Gottman, PhD, on observations at his U. of Washington "Love Lab"

Marriage isn't supposed to make you happy -
it's supposed to make you married.
Frank Pittman

Marriage is not just spiritual communion, it is also remembering to take out the trash.
Joyce Brothers

It is instructive that 87 percent of those incarcerated in American prisons either
don't know who their father is or have not had any contact with their fathers in years.
Herbert London, Hudson Institute
