They say a man isn't complete until he is married.

And then he is finished...

Women trying to change their husband into what they want instead of just marrying someone who already is what they want.

Because women more strongly want to keep their children with them, in states where there is a presumption of shared custody with the husband the percentage of women who initiate divorces is much lower.

I for one don't mind the high divorce rate. It's the only thing that makes me consider getting married.

How do you know the divorce rate is "abnormally high"?

Why commit when you dont have to? Right?

People are lazy and all about themselves nowadays, marriage is a joke, farce and other wonderful names you can think of...that according to probably 70-80% of the population.
Kids think if they find someone who they like, they can stay with them until something better comes along.

People need to take responsibility, marriage is a pain to make work, it isnt easy...if you cant see yourself really doing it, dont get married...

Divorce is a product of Americans being lazy and not working at their relationships.

Yes, but the short-term benefits often outweigh the short-term costs. You get sex and acceptance from society(not you can't get this outside of marriage, but society doesn't look down on it this way) , shared benefits(medical coverage, etc), privileges under law(everything from spousal secrecy to tax benefits), and another income to secure credit for big purchases(houses, cars, etc). With all of that, marriage is a hard deal to pass up.

I blame people for trying to force their moralities on others.

lol, awwwww, afraid your beliefs can't stand on their own?

Not when my beliefs violate some law in which I can be arrested and jailed because we live in such a Nanny state...

And how does this relate to the high divorce rate? Are you upset because you can't marry your daughters and it's straining your marriage between you and your cousin?

Unfortunately it did not stop your parents from producing you...

Still haven't answered the question though

Lack of SEX would be my guess, but I've never been married so I am really not qualified to answer.

woman's lib is the reason for the abnormally high divorce rate.
Pardly, but that merely means that sh*ty marriages are more likely to disolve than in the past. Marriages may have been just as bad 40 years ago, but divorce was less condoned.

I view it as there are no roles anymore. Just two people "marrying." Previously the roles were well defined and hence each person could work toward that role.

Men are now expected to take on many of the roles and responiblities women had. I wanna know what responsiblities woman have taken on other than "I get to have a career now and get to shift more onto my husband...wheeee!"

In fact, IMHO you're seeing the backlash of gender ambiguity. Men and women are starting to cherish their differences instead of trying to be uni-sex metrosexuals. That is a good thing. Equal does not mean the same.

I don't know about that all women's lib meant in my life was that I got to somehow sandwich in 40 hours a week or more of paid employment ontop of cooking, cleaning, laundry and childcare. My ex husband's idea of parenting was when he got to "babysit" for our kids while he and they slept and I busted my ass in
a warehouse on the 3rd shift."Shift more onto my husband" please,he'd let dirty dishes sit for days and laundry pile up into billowing heaps, those things were my "job"

Personally, I don't like the concept of marriage. Plus, if you're unhappy with your partner, why stay together--for the kids? Having been one of the kids whose parents stayed together for, I'd rather they had separated rather than stayed together making each other unhappy and the kids unhappy.

Go back to the 60's when it was illegal for black's to marry white's, flash forward to today where people are hounded to fit into the typical nuclear family marriage mold. Some people do not fit this mold and what is considered to them as normal is seen as deviant and wrong by the Christian Right. Sort of like interracial marriages way back then.

Catholic priests have to take a vow of celibacy for their career. If man was intended to be celibate, he would have been born without a penis

Gay men are being reeducated by the Church to lead hetero lives.

People are getting married because it is the "Right" thing to do...in order to procreate or because he has already knocked her up and it is the Christian thing to do. People are getting married before they truly know their partner or are ready for it. Marriage is not for everyone nor should it be refused between consenting adults...Also it should not be a sin to remain unmarried

It's just a fvcked up world and although the 1st amendment does grant us freedom of religion, it does not grant us freedom from dogmatic religious persecution from the morality police. I believe in taking responsibility and control for your on lives rather than rely on special interest groups to make those decisions for them

Because, under our current divorce laws, it's easier to divorce than to stick it out. Divorce is a very profitable business for lawyers and our court system, and so our legal system has evolved in such a way as to encourage people to divorce. There's really no other reason.

I'm more concerned about the corporate money-makers who tell young married couples that they're not properly married unless they spend $20k+ (now 3 months salary) on a ring and another $30k on the wedding, all so she can have her "Special Day".

As it is, the oaths involved in marriage are very straight-forward. If you don't understand the words "'Til Death do us part", then you shouldn't get married. Part of taking responsibility for yourself is learning to understand your own decisions.

1. Instant gratification society. We want something, and we want it now. We don't want to wait.
2. Decay of values - enhanced and spread via media (movies, mtv, etc.)
3. Porn - creates unrealistic expectations for bedroom performance.

Before I got married, we had to meet with the preacher concerning why we wanted to get married (and have to go through all those pre-marriage classes). He told me that I was the first person in a long long time who didn't respond to the question "why do you want to get married?" with "because we're in love." In fact, he pointed out that I never even said the word love. He said we seemed to have a good idea what we were getting into - a lifelong committment to someone else, and we didn't have to attend any of those pre-marriage classes. Looking back after 15 years, it's amazing that we made it through some of the tough periods - considering that most people these days would have given up. And, we're quite happy today.

In a religious sense, no marriage = no sex = celibacy
