What's the deal with long boot times with Skylake motherboards

I'm seeing 18+ seconds on Asus boards.

Why?

We have some HP servers take less time.

I'm to Windows loading screen in ~3 seconds on a Gigabyte Ivy Bridge motherboard.

My MSI board takes a couple of seconds.

So its nothing to do with Skylake. But perhaps due to what you got connected and/or installed.

And maybe some bios settings? Fast boot, ultra fast boot (if supported by the gpu).

If you haven't already, go in and deactivate everything you don't use, such as legacy ports, and then set your boot disk to the only bootable device. Sometimes those little things add up to a lot.

I don't have one yet to test different settings.
I was originally going to get a Gigabyte z170 mini itx until I read about the horrible throttling it does without even being overclocked.

Then I thought I would look into Asus and read this review here at silentpcreview:

They give a list of hardware connected, which seems minimal.
They try to optimize boot sequence.

Just wondering if others are seeing this.
Maybe I'll look at MSI as ShintaiDK mentions fast boot times.

When I recently freshly installed Win10, I was getting to the desktop in under 10 seconds. Now that drivers and progs are installed it takes exactly 1 minute.

My skylake build boots so fast I barely get a chance to see any screens for more than a brief flash. Less than 10 seconds total. ASUS H170 PRO GAMING.

I've done one build with Skylake and an ASUS board. No discernable boot delays.

There must be some setting that is causing huge delays for Asus

Heh. I usually set the init times and BIOS delay on my motherboard to be at least 10 seconds. I'm patient, and it gives me time to put down my beer and press "F11" or whatever.

Saying X vendor is fast and Y vendor is slow is so rubbish. People either don't know what they are doing or their problem is specific to their build/setup. ASRock/MSI/Gigabyte/ASUS builds I've done, all have more or less similar boot times. The less sophisticated boards of ALL brands tend to POST faster due to less features/expansion options/etc they get. So yah, cheaper is faster too! Ironically. Somebody mentioned above, you should use Fast Boot / Ultra Fast Boot whenever you can if you wear the stopwatch at all times. Standby mode was invented for a reason! Heh.

That SPCR review is very confusing, I agree.
