Yeah, I thought we had this discussion a couple of months ago......and that XP performs optimization on your HD automatically when your HD is not in use.

I use O&O Pro for my data and storage partitions and the built-in defragger for my OS and applications on the primary partition.

Not to mention its one less software app installed on your machine which probably makes a bigger difference than the fragmentation anyway.

I've used Norton Speeddisk in the past and do not recommend it.

I use Perfect Disk 6 as well. I think it's the best of the best. Before that I use to schedule the built in XP Defrag to run once a week.

I like being the Lone Ranger. I tried 'em all - including Diskeeper 8. I settled on PerfectDisk by Raxco (Canada) - it has (for me) a much better visual representation than Diskeeper (same as XP's native one - Speed Disk used to be good, but not with NTFS. I never "defrag" - I always optimize fully, and I do it almost daily. It works for me - I have been doing that in Windows in 95, 98, 98SE, ME and now XP Pro - and I have NEVER had to reformat and start over.

I have used SpeedDisk in the past. I'll use Windows in the future....A Ghost Image is available with a clean install of all applications/Drivers. Data is backed up on CD's using multiple/redundant levels of depth. I've never lost a byte of data, only time (occasionally), is ever lost.

So much for the idea that you don't need to defrag under XP......really began to notice a slowdown in stuff loading up recently and checked Norton Speedisk today.....which said I had 55% fragmentation. Four hours later (whew!) after defrag I booted up and whoa! Nite and day difference.

I actually have Cacheman set to defrag while idle, so when I'm at class during the day my system defrags on its own. Nifty love. I rarely have to actually take effort to defrag, but when I do do it manually, I use the default Windows app. Works fine.

I have my Diskeeper 8 Pro set to defrag on screensaver mode,so I really never need to do a defrag manually.

O & O Defrag, because it's the first one I tried and I liked it. It runs automatically every so often and it's quick when it does, means I can just forget about it unlike using the windows one where I kept forgetting for months at a time. I'm sure diskeeper 8 is just as good tho.

That's interesting. I use the Windows defrag while in safe mode too. We must be the only ones on the planet that do so! What's the advantage of setting the pagefile to zero during defrag?

O&O is not bad ,I was using it for awhile until I tried Diskeeper 8 Pro,and have never gone back since,it`s worth downloading the free trial version to see if you prefer it over O&O defrag program.

I'm running Diskeeper 7.
It's fast and rulez over the standard Windows defragger.
Can anyone tell me what improvements they made in version 8?
