I wanted to try to learn something about Linux and decided to try Mandrake which can be downloaded free here. Aside from not knowing anything about Linus, I'm not exactly sure why two different versions are offered or what difference there is in application. Can someone explain. Thanks!

I'm assuming that I want one or the other of the first two for a t-bird?

Welcome to the Wonderful world of Linux!

Get the i586 iso, that way you can easily burn it to a CD(and you can boot from it also)

Thanks people, Now suppose I get the iso and burn it to a cd. How do I install that to a clean hard drive or blank partition. Do I first have to make the cd bootable, or do I say just click on the iso file on the cd?

I believe the cd is bootable. Go here for the user's manual that give detail info. on the installation.

What are you using to burn it with ? I would suggest NERO if you are using windows to make a CD bootable based on a ISO.

I have Nero and I have a 24X plextor. The machine I want to put linux on I jiboneyed together from old parts, an antique floppy and CDM-P523 v2.1, what ever that one is 24 speed plain old CD drive. The hard drive is a gig and a half which is why I thought a stand alone Linux unite would be best.

Don't use GetRight to download it from different servers. I tried that about twice and everytime the install would fail. Then I tried to download it that way again and started checking the MD5 sums. It never matched up. I ended up just downloading it from one server. The server was about 350k/s anyway. So, make sure that you download from one server and that you check the MD5 sums before burning.
