What's the difference between a Porsche GT1, GT2, and GT3

I have no idea on the specs on them or the actual mechanical differences. Can anyone shed some light?

What's different between the 3 concerning engines, transmissions, aerodynamics, suspension, chassis, etc?

A simple comparison (I don't have time to link now):

The GT1 was a high priced street version of the race car that won LeMans in 1998 (I think 98). Flat-six, turbocharged.... ARGUABLY based on the 911... but not really. Engine was amidship, rumored to have about 600 to 650 hp (in LeMans trim).

The GT2 is the "racing" version of the 911 Turbo... its street legal, rear wheel drive, stripped to a "reasonable" level (still has radio, A/C, etc). Flat-size, rear engined, with 456hp.

The GT3 is the "racing" version of the naturally aspirated 911. Also flat-6, rear engined, rear wheel drive, with about 375-hp.

Check out www.porsche.com ... they typically have a LOT of info. Hope this helps.

I thought the GT1 was just the 911 Turbo, i.e. ~420 hp, turbo'ed (obviously), and 4wd.

oh yeah, how can anyone like ESM? Dr. Kraige is probably the most boring professor I've ever had.

Nope, the GT1 was a RWD Lemans racer (it's the one that did cartwheels down a straight at about 180 MPH ). The GT3 uses a flat-6 that is based around the GT1's engine.

No, HokieESM is correct. The GT1 is just a street-legal version of the LeMans racer. It has similar body lines compared to the 911, but its lower and more squashed - and quite a bit more powerful.

See the TopGear video at Taner.net.

edit: Hey NFS, the GT1 raced in the GTS class, correct?

GT1(street version)

Power 544 bhp / 405.8 kW @ 7000 rpm
BHP/Liter 171.9
Torque 600 Nm / 442.5 ft lbs @ 4750 rpm
Power to weight ratio 0.44 bhp/kg
Top Speed 192.6 mph / 310.0 km/h
0-60 mph Acceleration 3.40 s

Even though it was a "slower" car than the McLaren F1 it was a much better on the course track than the F1 was.

Ah yes, I've had that video in my collection for quite a while now. Thanks for reminding me!
