I'm going to upgrade my cpu soon .... so I want to find out if they are different.
Also, I was wondering if I can use the new XP or MP cpu on my old KK266Plus-R motherboard ...
Someone told me that I need to update my bios, but I can't find a new bios update at www.iwill.net ...

MP are AMD approved for multi-processor setups (i.e. dual cpu's)

If you're planning on only using a single processor, just go with an XP

MPs cost more, but save you the trouble of buying some glue, a conductive pen, and spending 2 hours of your time unlocking it. Oh yeah, and if your XP won't run in SMP for some strange reason, AMD won't help you. If the MP won't, they'll replace it.

Actually MP's arent' unlocked. They just don't have the laser pits cut into the L1 bridges like the XP's do making them easier to unlock...the old fashion way. You can run XP's in smp also, however, you may have to reconnect the L5 bridge to do so. Earlier XP's like mine don't have the L5 cut so they worked just fine. May not be the case with newer ones.

No, for most apps, dual processors do not actually make your computer twice as fast. You need to

1) run an operating system that supports SMP (dual processors)
2) run applications that support dual processors

You can also assign certain processes to certain processors, in order to, say, give a program full access to the second cpu while your main OS runs off your first cpu, but for most applications, you're really not gonna notice too huge of a gain.

If you're seriously considering it, though, do some keyword searches on this forum for dual processors or something like that...you should find a bunch of threads about it

I have been through a few 1800+ XP MPs, and did not have to touch anything on the processor to raise or lower the multiplier. They were not locked. I am running one now at 8.5x200.

All the MP's I have come across, and numerous threads indicating the same, are unlocked.
