I have a Moto G, iPad Air, and PC. I don't have any problems between the three keeping my contacts/calendars synced. I think ecosystem is far less of a factor than it was a few years ago.

Probably because you're doing stuff which is supposed to sync between platforms nowadays and has nothing to do with 'ecosystem' in the current sense?

I'm genuinely curious what other stuff you're referring to that requires a single platform.

The practical differences between Android/iOS have shrunken to a point of being negligible. I say just buy what you like (I bought the Moto based on price and the iPad based on screen quality/color calibration)

Incorrect. The key benefit of iOS and OSX is the seamless integration between the two platforms which you don't get with mixing and matching.

Phone calls, texting, multi-screen, safari sync, personal hotspot, handoff, iCloud drive...

Like I said, the differences between the platforms is shrinking every generation while interoperability is growing, and now the companies have to really get down to the short strokes and develop marginally useful features to justify keeping users under one umbrella. This is not just against Apple but Google as well. (Making calls from my computer instead of picking up my phone? Be still my beating heart!)

My point to the OP's question was, ask yourself if you really need those exclusive features before spending the money to buy a new phone, computer, etc.

Niiice. Why doesn't air drop work between my osx laptop and iphone?

It will with Yosemite and iOS 8. FINALLY.

It's not just the phone calls, but being able to text my friends from my laptop is nice. I have 2 friends that I text frequently, but they don't use iPhones, so therefore don't have iMessage. Continuity looks very interesting, and IIRC it will be semi-open such that MS or Google could write it into their software so you could hand-off your current open document/tab from your Mac to your iDevice.

Is it semi-open when it's only between iDevices?

No, I somehow think I already know the answer

When AT&T broke the cell phone tower by our house and took three days to fix it, that particular ability completely saved our asses.

I meant the API. Apple isn't the only one that's going to be able to use HandOff is the point per this article on Ars. My point was that it's not uncommon for Apple to have a few secret parts of public APIs that only they get to use.

However yes, it's only between OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 devices. And even then I don't know if it's going to work on every single one of them. If they're using BT4.0 for example... that's going to hardware limit devices.

I've tried Android on OS X and had a bad experience, I'm all in Apple from here on out. Android is a great OS but it just didn't play well. I still use windows at work and just can't go back to it at home. The integration of the ecosystem is just plain wonderful. The only thing I have gotten rid of so far is the Airport Extreme for being to simple.

No as I said you don't have to tell me, I know it's usual for certain people to couch everything that they're obsessed by in 'positive keyword' terms.

Is Applescript semi-open? Does anyone go on about "Wow how about that Powershell, it's so semi-open?"

While after my 6 month or so stint with Android phone (LG G2), Android just isn't there yet probably 2-3 years behind still and I dont see it catching up. I really liked the nexus 7 so decided to give android a shot, and its been terrible.

Android is planning to have integration with chrome os, like that OS will ever gain ground...

I am really surprised how bad android is when trying to use as a phone os. I think my 3gs is better than this phone, except the screen.

Its true that apple just makes a better quality product. And if you JB you can do everything and more you can do with android. And WOW play store is just a mess. What a bad taste android left I doubt I can bring myself to try it again anytime soon. Maybe windows phone time, after iphone 6.

I always wondered if anyone would even care if Apple openly admitted that it was completely capturing every bit of data you send and receive. With the recent revelations (Zdziarski et al) we are moving dangerously close to that point.

This company, with its billions in cash, is in a position to exploit user data. Imagine you are a small company using Apple products to conduct technical discussions of an upcoming design. And Apple gets its hands on that discussion, and uses their enormous wealth to front run a patent. The implications are absolutely incredible. But what is even more incredible is the sheep like willingness to tolerate anything even remotely like this in the marketplace. Will that sheeplike tolerance continue? You have to believe it will in order to believe their ecosystem has a future.
For highly sensitive/technical/confidential discussions, you'd be an idiot to trust standard consumer devices/software anyway. This is the stuff encryption was born for.

That said, is integration really that big of a deal? Being technical myself (use w/e I want with what I want, workarounds if necessary, etc), I paid integration no mind whatsoever, so I wouldn't know.
